Was a slow day on Lew. Hooked up early on a bass that was roughly 5 minutes old, 2 sandies and a carp for the day. I pull into a spawning pocket for a bit and after a while I finally get bit and she really just feels like a good keeper. I can see her back as she runs across the bow and now Im thinking shes a great kicker. She then turns back towards the boat and jumps; I proceed to sh** myself - shes an absolute monster. The biggest bass I have seen in person. I know its easy to say but she had to be every bit of a double digit pickle. She runs toward the back of the boat and jumps again, a confirmed donkey and confirmed soiled pants. Im stunned by her size but Im playing her right but from what I can remember she seemed to be hooked in the side of the mouth with the spinner I was throwing. Im taking my time and I make my way to the riders seat, set the rod above my head to keep the pressure on her and she makes one last odd surge and out of the water comes my spinner. Game over. Queue the sad song while my heart remains broken. I tried to fish for another hour or so as, naturally, the rain began to hammer down on me as though I was living out some emo high school kids life, but I couldnt stop thinking about what had happened so I drove 15 minutes in the pelting rain and trailered up. I wouldnt have done anything differently but I still cant believe it went the way it went. #prayersareappreciated
If you can't find em wind em.

You might not have caught her, but at least you fooled a wise old one to bite!

I feel your pain.
I hooked into one on Sunday. Only fought it for about 10 seconds and never saw it but I can promise you from the feel it would have been the biggest fish I ever caught. My knot broke at the bait.
About 20 minutes later my crawfish squarebill came floating by from the north a good ways (I had hooked the fish down south about 75 yards. I guess she swam North and finally shook the bait.
Luckily the good Lord provided me with a ton of fish that day so while I was bummed I didn't see the big one, I was thankful for all the fish and the brief fight!

Everyone who fishes at Lake Fork can tell you a story that is nearly the same. Some more than others.

I feel your pain. Last year I switched from a bass boat to a bay boat because of spinal surgery which made it darn near impossible for me to get in an out of the drivers seat. Shortly after I bought it I hooked the biggest bass of my life. Got her to the side if the boat and struggle to reach over the side and lip her. Needless to say she jumped and spit my chatter bait right in my face. Stopped at Academy on the way home and bought a net.

I have a similar sad tale. Was fishing last year at Fork and hooked a dawnkey. Had to be 8 lb.+, a true SAL. As I got her to the boat, she gave me one last shake and the jig went flying. Bye-bye.... as I stared down at the floor of the boat for a few minutes, I raised my head and there she was........ my net still tucked between the seats... laughing at me ........ still SMH

Everyone who fishes at Lake Fork can tell you a story that is nearly the same. Some more than others. Late January one year, we had been pitching jigs on creek channels all day without a bite. Decided to fish a bridge piling on the way back to the ramp. Hopped the jig and she thumped it. I had her on for about 10 seconds, and it was by far the largest fish I'd ever had on. She came off because a chipped rod guide cut my braid. Caught a few 9s and countless 7 and 8 pounders, but never had a DD. I've seen more than a few monsters come off the bridges that time of year, and I know that was my shot at a DD. Still makes me sick. ETA: I didn't realize what had happened at first. I just tied another jig on and pitched it back out there thinking, "I know you haven't had a bite all day until the biggest fish of your life and you just lost her, but get your head back in the game and maybe there's another one down there." As the jig is heading out, I thumb the spool and feel no resistance. I look up and the jig just keeps flying. The rod guide had cut my line again. I look in the back of the boat and my dad is about to fall out because he's laughing so hard. I've never legitimately thought about throwing him out of the boat until that day.
