Do you power your tank off your trolling motor battery or use a dedicated battery?

The reason I ask is I have been using one of my trolling motor batteries and that battery typically gets pulled down into the 30% range on a windy day. This problem manifested itself yesterday as I lost nearly my entire tank of nice shad when the battery went out and my tank stopped circulating. I checked the tank when I got up and only had one dead shad. I was fine with that, cleaned my fish I caught the day before and when I looked at the tank most of the shad were dead. he battery was on the maintainer and said 100%. Just wondering how other people avoid this, especially the guides, as they cannot have this happen or they will have unhappy customers.

Note to admins: Please do not move this post. If you put it in another forum no one with useful advice will see it. Shad tanks are exclusively a white bass thing. Thanks in Advance.

So how small a battery considering weight could you get by using?

I have a group 24 I use for the splasher that I run the tank with when using live bait most of the time. I have also used my trolling motor batteries with no problems for a day of fishing. They are group 31's and normally have 60% left after 7-8 hours on the lake. When keeping overnight, the shad have been in the tank a few hours and the water is staying clean, I use a 120V aerator with one of those $4.00 aquarium stones from the fish section of Wal Mart and have never had a problem.

i use a dedicated battery. If it gets low it should be late in the day and I'm probably done fishing anyways.

Neither? I have a starting battery and a deep cycle house battery that runs fish finder, lights, live well, etc. You can set it up so that when the engine is running it will charge up your house battery once the starting battery is topped off.

So, you are using a Blue Sea Add A Battery Switch?

My Yamaha has a auxiliary charging wire under the cowl that just needs to be extended to the house bank. It automatically charges the two banks but at the same time keeps them isolated so there is no chance of accidentally running the starting battery down. While charging, the starting battery is #1 priority then what is left goes to the house. Pretty slick.

I'm not sure which outboards have this option. For an after market add on these work great http://www.yandina.com/c100Info.htm . Basically does the exact same thing. I think Blue Sea may have one too not sure?

Thanks Gborg. That's the way I am going. Bought two new trolling motor batteries today and will use the remaining good battery as a dedicated bait tank battery. Think I will also look into getting that combiner that jonboater referred too.

If your battery truly is dedicated to the bait tank and is just loose in the boat the combiner is not for you. I guess you could still do it but really it is more for a permanent battery install. So if the boat allows this battery to be mounted permanently you might as well go all in and use it to it as a "house" battery. You never have to worry about the starting battery being down because of fish finders, lights, bilge pump, live well, etc. Basically all you are doing is separating out the big positive motor cable all by its lonesome from all other positive wires going to the original single battery. These other positive wires should include among other things one or more heavier (+ positive) wires going to the dash and other power distribution panels. These simply go on the positive of the extra battery. For the negative side you will need a heavy jumper to connect the negatives on both batteries. The combiner has a single negative to connect along with a positive for each battery. That is it.

The only way to wire a boat if you have room for the batteries. Oh and if you are worried about having to buy a new 2-bank charger because you now have 2 batteries? Forget about it because the single bank will charge both batteries through the combiner. Though not as fast as a 2-bank.

My Suzuki 175 had two isolated, independent circuits coming off the motor as well. 1st one was to starter battery only, second one ran to house battery. It would charge both batteries at the same time or just one as needed. Worked flawlessly. Ran a grayline for hours with no problems.
