All State SUCKS. High rates and poor service. I have Travler's now. Rates are OK. Had a roof claim two years ago. Paid it no problem. Did have a 2% of the value of the house deductible but that is normal for Texas.
Totaled a truck the same year. Paid out no problem and my rates did go up but not very much.

add me to the list recommending using an independent agent...I just let my agent switch my auto and home policys to Travelers Ins. from Farm bureau....gonna save me about $400.00 per year... had insurance (cars/home/boat) with allstate for years had two claims in 20 plus years and both times I had to get a lawyer to make them pay a legitimate claim....if you use an independent agent, the insurance companies know they can't screw customers or that agent will stop writing insurance for them.....
FWIW...got two friends who have had to get an attorney to make insurance company pay a legitimate claim...first one was against Progressive...he hit a floating log and screwed up his lower unit... had co-angler as witness and adjustor tried to claim it was ordinary wear and tear...they settled the claim right before it went to court....second guy ran over several stumps/broken off trees in Seminole and punched hole in his boat....state farm adjustor is trying to blame manufactor(Triton) my friend had to get an attorney and I suspect state farm will settle before it goes to court...

Allstate is probably the last insurance co I'd go with, at least for the home. I've been told they got rid of all their adjusters and are using 3rd party companies, wait times waaaay out there. In my recent experience they've made homeowners pay out of pocket for repairs before paying, then took the deductible out of that amount after they've submitted receipts. That's if they pay at all.

From someone in the industry. Adjuster now and once and agents office manager, get insurance from a reputable company with a good agent. Might not be the cheapest but you get what you pay for. Roofers all say Allstate is bad and I agree from what I know they want twice the damage other companies do to total a roof. Money is important but being covered even more so. Talk to agent and ask questions. People always assume they are covered for everything and that's not the case. Best to discuss and ask questions of agent if you don't already know the policy or coverages.

I highly recommend Mission Select. When I bought my first house I got Mission Select(Texas based company I believe). Before I had even moved my stuff into the house a huge windstorm came through and knocked over a bunch of shops and tore up a bunch of roofs. One of those shops was mine and the debris flew straight into the house. They had somebody at the house the next day and cut me a check within 10 days. They more than covered the repairs and were very easy to deal with. Plus, they were 1/3 the price of Progressive and Allstate and 1/4 the price of State Farm.

I switch from St. Farm to Germania a few months ago. Germania saved me a good amount of money for the same coverage.
