Does anyone have any experience fly fishing around the Ruidoso NM area? We are planning a family trip in June and I wanted to hit some local water. Any help would be appreciated.

Check out this site; lots of information available: www.ruidoso.net/visitor-information/outdoors/fishing. I personally have never fished that area, but have been up in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. I hope the streams around Ruidoso are as nice as the northern ones.

Thank you for the reply. I have been on that site and it has some very good information. We originally were planning on fishing the northern part of NM, however the wives are now going and want a "tourist" town.

might try to sway them towards Santa Fe. Lots better fly fishing up that way.

Having grown up in Ruidoso 40+ years ago I can tell you the fishing is not what it used to be ...the stream fishing on the Rio Ruidoso and the Rio Bonito have been greatly diminished by years of drought and very little annual snowpack. The Tribe also used to really promote and manage their fisheries but the casino takes priority now. The have reopened the upper canyon portion of the Rio Ruidoso on the reservation after they closed it for several years after the flood of 2008 ...I have not fished it since it reopened. That said ...Alto Lake and Grindstone Lake do offer some nice still water opportunities. A trip over to Mayhill to fish the Rio Penasco is well worth the trip. New Mexico Game and Fish has a open gate lease on a portion of the river or you can pay a fee and fish the Mulcock ranch.

Sorry for the long delay in responding. I have been out of pocket. Thank you for the advise. I believe we will make a trip over to the ranch and see what we can stir up. It's only an hour or so from where were staying in ruidoso.

Alto lake was going to be out main target but I'm curious to see what the local fly shops say when we get there.

Thanks again!
