What is it? I read on here regularly how much difficulty folks have catching fish on a jig, or they never catch a fish on a jig - ever. Why is it so hard?

Confidence. I rarely fish them but that is going to change.
See you on the lake and have a great day!

It's a confidence thing, once you have one good jig bite day, it will never leave the deck.

I watched a couple videos on YouTube where they talk about jigs catching smaller amounts of fish as compared to other baits, but they did say that the fish caught on jigs tend to be bigger fish.
I don't know. As I have only caught a couple fish on jigs and those were from flipping docks.
That said, I do keep a jig on a rod on the deck. I agree with the confidence notion.

It took a while for me to build confidence in the jig. What was said above is right. Once you have a day when they are on it, it changes your perspective. The other part is the types of bites you get on a jig vary widely. For every time they thump it, there are 10 where you feel nothing. I think it takes more concentration and line watching then your average TX rigged plastic. Glad I got over the hump with them.

I think it takes more concentration and line watching then your average TX rigged plastic. Glad I got over the hump with them. It takes more practice to get a jig to enter the water quietly. Rod and line quality come more into play when fishing a jig and detecting bites or something different. It takes more experience to fish them efficiently. You can set the hook all day with a Trig on "maybe that's a bite", but set the hook of a jig into wood, and you probably aren't getting it back. Losing a few relatively expensive jigs the first time you try one can be demoralizing. People see the pros catching on 3/4oz plus and heavy big trailered jigs; and that's where they start, when they'd build confidence faster on smaller/lighter jigs

I used to never throw them. Finally one day I was fishing s steep rocky bank and picked one up. After those first couple hard bites, it made me want to feel more of that. Eventually I built up full confidence in them.
3 years ago that was about all I threw. One specific jig in the same size with the same trailer and I threw it all year long. I consistently caught pretty decent bags with it too.
Wish I had more time to experiment with other baits

Id recommend folks who arent comfortable or confident with a jig to throw a fb of the bank on structure or around wood cover, youll get confidence, post-spawn time into the summer is a perfect time for it

Its like this last time out a was catching them with the jig, nothing else worked. Today had to use a crankbait and a chatter bait. You have to let the fish tell you what they want. I love fishing jigs but I don't give them or any other bait more than an hour, then I am changing till I find out what works.

A jig can be your best Big Bass bait because it can hold all the senses that a big fish is looking for. Throwing a bait that has all the senses puts the odds in your favor to fooling an Old BASS. - Sight - Sound - Smell - Taste - Movement - Vibration - Thermal Change - Mimic the Forage

Fishing it where I would typically throw a Carolina rig or a deep diving crank bait.
See you on the lake and have a great day!

I took the advice of a friend, and took nothing but a jig rod and a handful of jigs to the lake until I caught them on it. Did the same thing with big swimbaits, then I got into Muskie fishing, now even the biggest baits arent nothing for me to throw confidence wise, guess it is all relative

I couldnt fish jigs and wanted to learn how. So I bought some jigs and trailers. Took everything out of the boat but 2 pokes and the jugs. And a buddy went with me with nothing but jugs also. We went to Caddo lake and fished all day with jigs. Caught some missed some but mainly learned how to fish them. I love jug fishing now and have won many tournaments using jigs....

Lots of good jigs on the market today but for the money you cannot beat this one. Good strong hook, weedguard is angled right, dual rattles (put a drop of superglue on them) and lands upright most of the time when it hits bottom. I haven't caught a Monster on one yet but I did catch a 15.0 on this exact 1/2 oz jig. Color was WM/Pumpkin. http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Booyah_Boo_Jigs/descpage-BYBJ.html

I love throwing jigs but some days they just do not want it so I quit trying to force feed it to them all day. When they are on a jig bite you can have an awesome day.

I normally use a Zoom Chunk but will also use a Paca Craw chunk. Don't over analyze it. Some of the biggest fish I ever caught on a jig, I just stuck whatever was lying on the floor of the boat. When I caught my 15, I had threaded a used Zoom worm on back.
I caught a 12 with a Zoom horny toad on there. It doesn't have to be pretty. It just has to be in front of one when they are ready to eat. That means we need to be out there fishing right now instead of sitting on the sofa pecking on my silly laptop!!
