what is a good way to cover a chip in the paint on your tungsten weights, Ive just been using a sharpie to color in the spot but that only last about 5 or 6 casts before I have to color it again. Is it even worth trying to repair the paint?

Harder Than Nails polish. It really needs to get a top coat of Epoxy at home for 12 hours of set up time.

buy unpainted ones, then heat them until they are bright red using a torch then place them in ice water. they will turn a cool blackish color that wont chip.

Looks to me that this process would cause the books to be tempered which would harden them like a knife blade and cause them to be brittle and break on the hook set.

Just keep fishing with it, no need to "touch up" your weights, IMO.

Tempering actually softens steel. But you are right heating it to a glowing temp the quenching in water will harden it. That's just called austenitizing/quenching not tempering.

Best way to make them black is to burn them. Hands down.

Here in MN, the northern pike LOVE the shiney tungsten. So we have to buy black or burn them so they don't get bit off.

I dont understand why anglers buy painted weights... I have used them and feel like I get many more bites with nonpainted weights... I definitely wouldnt waste time trying to fix chips on them thats for sure. Good marketing on someones part though. Just my opinion... time better used for catching fish.
