How many of you guys re-powered instead of going with a newer boat? How old is too old to re-power?

I recently had a 2014 motor put on a 2004 boat. It all depends on how much you like your boat, the condition of your boat and what is in your budget. My boat is a Bass Cat and it is still in great shape and it outlasted the original Mercury motor. Lots of hours on the motor.

Depends on how much you like your boat, how long you plan on keeping it after re-power, and ultimately how much money you want to spend.

I have a 2012 520, I will repower in a second. I like the boat and 16k to 17k for a new merc sounds alot better than 70k.

There's a whole lot of 90's Rangers on their second and even third engines. I'm looking to repower my 1994 481VS soon. Take care of them, and they will literally last life time. I'm in my 50's and starting to value money more than monthly payments.

I have seriously considered repowering my 91 492v it has a 97 Merc 225 efi, I am waiting to read actual reviews on the new Merc 225 Four Stroke. I've been through every inch on my boat since I bought it and it is solid.

The Mercury four stroke won't have the low end you are used to with the EFI. You might wait till they come out with the 250. Its rumored to be a larger block and should have more grunt getting out of the hole. The 492 is a heavy boat.

I bought my boat used with a Mariner Super Magnum 200 with some stuff done for performance. Since I was fishing tournaments at the time I put a new 150 Opti on the boat. It went from a 90's to a 70 mph hull. I've tried a pro max just to get going faster but found out pretty quick that I don't want to drive that boat at 90 plus. The boat ran well but stuff just went by too fast.
So now I have a 200XS on it. A high rpm 2.5 block which is fuel efficient and still an 80's kind of rig.

If you like your boat and keep the important stuff upgraded there is no reason to change boats. Trolling motor, engine and electronics can all be changed out to keep your boat upgraded. You can't do that to a truck or car very easily.

A few years back you could get a new not rebuilt but new powerhead from Mercury for like $4000. Might check that out.

I re powered my champion. I don't hate the fish enough to pay $55000 for another boat. I spend enough on this one

These guys seem reasonable. It's where I'll go to get mine. I spoke with a couple of their customers that have Zero problems.
