I'm heading to Broken Bow this weekend with the wife and a couple friends and I plan to bring the fly rod. I'll only get a few hours on Saturday to fish. I've only been once before when I was pretty young and before I started fly fishing.

Any tips on what kind of flies they're biting on and maybe some place I can fish away from a crowd? Also, does the release of water at the dam have a big impact on the fishing? If so, is there somewhere I can monitor the release schedule?

Any help would be appreciated!

As of right now the river is pretty much unfishable. They are sending around 850cfs down spillway creek while they are doing maintenance at the powerhouse. Dont know if they will be through for this weekend or not.

Where do you find how much they are releasing from the spillway? The only information I can find is how much they are letting out of the power plant.

Nevermind, I think I found it although the data is about 36 hours old. It appears it is on this page under New Gate Discharge.

Yeah, the release they show on that page IS the Spillway release, I believe. GolferJeff or Turfdawg will probably confirm that. It show the latest change. Lately they've been bringing the flow down nicely and gradually since its recent peak of 800-something cfs. I fished the Evening Hole several weeks ago when it was bout what it is now, 250 or so. I fished a 5 wt with a Versaleader (speaking of sinking leaders) and various leeches/buggers. Did fine. Others were fishing heavy nymphs and catching.

the river was rolling pretty good last Saturday but I wouldn't say it was "un-fishable". It definitely made things tough. It was cold and rainy too so I only fished about 30 minutes and called it quite. I'll be planning another trip back to do more fishing. This was more of a family get away with some other friends so I just had to sneak some fishing in where I could

Just got back from two full days of fishing in Broken Bow. The water flow was back to normal and was nice and clear. We fished pretty much everywhere in the park but caught almost all our 30-40 fish in Spillway Creek (both the upper end and lower end). All of the fish were caught on nymph rigs, most of them on either size 18 midge pupas or size 18 RS2s. We did catch a few on the upper fly (a size 12 or 14 tungsten headed soft hackle hare's ear jig) but for the most part they wanted the little stuff. Also caught a few in Evening Hole and below the Swim Beach bridge, but Spillway Creek was where most of the action was at.

I've heard several people say spillway is fishing great right now. I really need to make a day trip and try out my "wife's" new Moonshine Epiphany I just got "her" wink wink

It was fishing really well. There were fish in the spots they were supposed to be in and they were hungry. One day there was a March brown hatch on Evening Hole. We missed that one, but were there for a hatch of size 22-24 cream-colored midges that we and a bunch of others cast at but didnt catch. We threw the smallest flies we had, size 20 griffiths gnats, and got ignored.

For sure man. I'm going to try to get back down there this fall when things are more stable. I'll give you a holler when I have a weekend picked out. Hopefully I can make it happen!
