The trailer brake lights and indicator lights work just fine but my running lights don’t. What gives? Any ideas?

Usually ground issues with trailer lights. Each light should be grounded to the trailer and I ground the harness to the trailer. Some ground through the hitch and ball and if it is rusty or greasy it sometimes does not ground out good. You see trailers going down the road lights flickering with every bump, those are grounded through the ball.

Either a fuse in the tow vehicle or a ground issue. If I can’t troubleshoot it in a minimum amount of time I usually just rewire the whole trailer so I know it’s done right. Wiring harness is cheap and it doesn’t take much time.

Check vehicle fuses, then plug on vehicle, then pigtail if used before residing the trailer. I had problems for almost a year when we going the pigtail was bad.

These posts always amaze me. I could tell you what is wrong in 2 minutes or less if I was standing there with a volt meter, but if we start diagnosing it over the interwebs, it takes a minimum of 2 days and 6 pages to find the answer.

I get your point, why don't you just tell him how to troubleshoot with the volt meter as mentioned ?

Check your vehicle fuses for trailer lights. Take the voltmeter and check your trailer plug to make sure it is getting power to the trailer and then and insert the red into the trailer wire while grounding the black on the trailer. Make sure your trailer lights are supposed to be on while you are doing this. I would start at the trailer tongue since it is both sides. If you have voltage there, try again at the lights and figure out where you are losing power. If you have 12 volts of power all the way to the lights then it is a ground issue. I would bet that it is a ground issue near the tongue since you don't have lights on either side.

Mine did that and it was a fuse in my truck.

Fuse on truck or connector, not a ground problem ( since the brake light’s
On the trailer use the same ground as the trailer running lights) the brake lights work, so they must have a ground.

Fuse in truck. I have a 2007 Denali and just revolved the exact issue with a fuse. Does your tow vehicle happen to be a gmc? My fuse was labeled trlr park. Funny name but true.
