Any thoughts or advantages vs. disadvantages?

I have fished a lot of private ponds over the years. Most pond owners have stocked the Copper Nose Bluegill. I have been told they do very well in ponds that are properly managed and they can get good size. I have caught many of SUPER nice Copper Nose Bluegill off of those ponds over the years. A lot of them going over one pound. A angler that goes by the handle of Meadow Lark is an EXPERT on pond management and he will post often. Try to contact him and he will give you all the answers you are looking for. thumb

What’s up Michael!
Could you stock CopperNose and Redear? You would have some hybrids after a year.

Personally I would go w CopperNose over hybrids.

Lemme know when it’s ready for a test fish. laugh

The ponds I fish that are private have all been stocked with Copper Nose Bluegill,Redear,Large Mouth Bass, and Channel Catfish. Ponds are very well managed and the fish are in super shape! I would say Copper Nose Bluegill are the fish to stock in your pond. woot

I know several ranch owners who have nice small lakes on their property. When it comes to sunfish they stock Copper Nose Bluegill.

Here’s some pros and cons I’ve learned over the years.

Hybrid bluegills:
• fast growing but on the top end reach no larger size than the copper nose
• very aggressive fish. This can make them a favorite for the kids and the fly anglers that might use that pond
• low reproduction…this is both good and bad depending on your objectives. Its bad if you want to also raise predators such as LMB. Its good in that the hybrid offspring are most often inferior to the original parent and less numbers generally = more food for the others.

Copper Nose:
• doesn’t grow as fast but reaches top end sizes that equal or often exceed the hybrids
• high reproduction makes it ideal for bass ponds and growing big bass
• native species to Florida and will reproduce true to genetics.

So, it depends on your objectives for the pond. In general, I prefer the hybrids in small ponds, i.e. around 1/4 acre and prefer the copper nose in larger ponds and any pond in which one of the target fish is the LMB.

Thanks for the feedback… The objective of the pond which is about 3/4 acre… Is to provide fun fishing for the kids. I really have no objective to raise and grow bass in the pond. For lack of better words I would prefer it to be a perch Pond.

The pond does have a heavy and healthy population of threadfin shad. It has very few bass in it.

So… From what I am reading it may be better to start the pond with Hybrids?
