So I grew up in San Antonio and fished Falcon, Amistad, Choke, Mathis, etc. a lot during the 70's, 80's and early 90's. Moved to Houston in '92 and started fishing Conroe. The lake was so different for me, it was demoralizing to fish and eventually caused me to sell my boat and quit bass fishing. I recently got the bass itch again, bought a boat and trying to get back into it. I know there are good fish in Conroe and I'm trying to figure them out but I'm starting to remember what caused me to give it up 25 yrs ago. I can go out and catch a handful of shorts and a keeper or two but no reliable patterns. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Spend scanning to find brush and other structure.

Here is a good spot for you to get a start on in Caney Creek. Go straight to the back by the deepest water there so you do not disturb and fish that may be holding on the edge of the creek channel. Work the two WHITE Funnel Points with your favorite search baits. If the fish are there work into the cut targeting any shoreline wood that is there. Work your way out of the cove by the RED Spray Line keeping the boat in deep water. Cast from the front to all the irregular features as marked in RED X's. This is a huge spawning flat with protrusions and gouges. Fish will be coming form the ledge of the creek channel on the steepest slopes it has to offer. Man in the back of the boat should be dragging a Crig with Brush Hog along this route. Once you guys develop a pattern then you make the adjustments to get into that pattern. If they are coming from on top of the flat and INSIDE Bend as marked then get shallow to take advantage of that pattern. If they are holding a little deeper in staging mode then stay off the top of them working the Crig to that depth.

That lake is a real kick to the self confidence, but a little piece of advice is that the difference between a 3 ot hook and a 2 ot hook will get you bites. Those fish are PICKY. I like to bounce from brush pile to brush pile personally, but there are many ways to catch them there.

Best way to catch them 90% of time. Piles piles piles.

For me, it's about structure. Buy some good electronics and scan a different area each time out. There are 100's of brush piles, submergered timber, and drop offs that hold fish. Then just fish your waypoints for the area you want to fish. There are days that you won't catch anything, not a bite.

Conroe aint easy and even the locals struggle from time to time. The biggest thing for that lake is to keep your head down and keep searching. The guys that do well there don't get spun out when they don't get bit, they know they will run into them eventually. There is really only 3 types of cover on that lake, docks and brush piles so one or the other is what you focus on. All the big events won there in the past few years have been on community holes so it's not like there is any magic tricks it's just being in the right place at the right time.

Go hit some rip rap and get crankin'! You'll catch some doing that sooner or later.

Conroe can be tough. I live on the lake and fish 2-3 times a week. There are days we still get skunked. I have been here a year and we have yet to have a day where we caught double digit numbers. That being said between the 3 guys that fish with me we have 3 8+ pounders and a ton of 4+ fish in 9 months time. Not a lot of other lakes you can say that on. I came from fishing lake Travis where we would catch 20+ on any decent day with all of them being 12 inches. There is no top water on this lake that I have seen (never seen anyone catch a fish on topwater). There are basically 3 patterns that seem to work. Softplastic on the bottom, small crankbaits, and weightless finesse stuff.
