have a new to me 2002 skeeter zx 225 --in the instrument cluster are 2 small orange warning lights --1 for low oil --1 for overheat --when you first turn on the key the oil light lights up like a self test then goes off when you start it ---the overheat light never lights ---is this correct ?

Yes, that is correct. If that overheat does come on (also has a loud buzzer), shut it down immediately!
