Myself and Rick-CatYakker fished the Nueces Canyon the other day. The bite was slow but we managed a few nice Bluegill,Bass,Redear, and some Longear. A nice Tilapia rounded out the catch. We fished several places on the Nueces River. Rick used his flyrod and I used my trusty ultralight with the "bait of champions" worms. Fish were caught in shallow water 2 to 3 feet deep holding very close to grass beds. Several nice Rios were spotted but would not bite. Fish are just now starting to get active. The bite should get better each day. After a day of hard fishing we stopped at the Town House Restaurant in Uvalde for a great dinner. Good times fishing the Nueces Canyon. It just don't get any better! fish

Super nice Tilapia. You are right...the bite keeps getting better each trip. I assume from your cap that u r an Astros fan. Can't wait for this season to begin. I got to go to game 4 of the world series last fall, so I can scratch that off my bucket list. Wasn't sure the Astros would be world champions in my lifetime. BTW...We got 2.5 inches of rain last night in New Braunfels...

When I was a kid, I remember my dad taking me to see them when they were the Colt 45s. It was before the Astrodome, and the mosquitos at that outdoor ballpark were huge. Yes...they should have another great year...

I have taken both of my boys to many of Astro's games. Both at the Astrodome and at Minute Made Ball Park. I have a ton of "Lifetime Memories"! Going to try to take in a few games this season at Minute Made! Looking forward to a GREAT year! rockon

Wow. I finally got to see the Canyon. The water reminded me of Montana Trout streams, especially with the 20 Mph winds. Kind of difficult with a 2 Wt. glass rod. But I just love that 2 Wt. so much that I couldn't bring myself to get my 4 Wt. out and strung up. My first road trip but hopefully not my last. Beautiful country and with Banker showing the way, it was a most memorable trip.

Nice post Chuck and Catyakker! Was going to kayak/fish the Canyon this month but work changed the plans! Looks like late summer early fall. When will be the fish start getting real active in the Canyon? Also have you fished the Sabinal this year? Catyakker: What type of flies were you using? noidea

Thanks Laker One or the reply. I was mostly using a yellow or black British Tadpole fly in size 14. Basically a small Wooly Bugger without the hackle. I also used a 1" Whacky Worm in light brown tied on a size 14 hook. The rubber worm is a leg off of a Puffer Worm or Light Up animal found in the toy dept. of Dollar General. I can make several hundred fly rod worms for $1.00. roflmao
