Looking to pick up my first big kid boat and am weighing ALL my options. I think I have run across something in the used department and though I haven't checked it out first hand yet, from what I understand it is in EXCELLENT shape, well cared for always kept under cover and maintained by a retired gentleman. The boat and motor are both from 2006 (a Mercury 125 4 stroke)....is 12 years pushing it? While new boats loose up to 35% of their value in the first few years....is it still worth it to go new vs. used? The idea of having a warranty gives me a warm fuzzy feeling BUT if the motor has been maintained and hours are average to low...is this even a consideration. This will be used 100% for fishing.

Signed,
Don't know what I don't know

Shoot thats a new one compared to what I run! Ive got an 84 Evinrude on a 91 Stratos, will take it anywhere, anytime without a single worry. All depends on how the boat and motor was cared for.

If it is maintained and the price is right you are usually better off financially buying used. Like another said, you lose some money just driving off the lot.

Good advice right here. I personally can't even think about a new boat financially so I rock what I can afford and I'm very proud of it. You lose a lot less money on your investment on something used if you play your cards right. Warranty IS great, but at a certain point you save so much money used... I always say go used. But that's me and I can fix stuff pretty easy when it goes wrong.

1991 492v with 1997 225 efi Merc. I've had newer boats and my Ole Ranger runs like a champ. If work gets in the way and it sits for 6 weeks my wallet and wife don't complain.
Lake test is a must and run it like u stole it. I drove 5 hours to buy my Ranger and told the guy straight up expect to spend a minimum of 1 hour on the water and I am running it hard or I am not making the trip. Needless to say you cant find everything I put a new SEI lower unit a year later.

I started out with a 86 skeeter with a 83 mercury 150 had that for almost 10 years. Ran great just had to do some TLC to every 6 months or so and used it 100% fishing and now have a 05 skeeter just went bigger for my sons high school bass club for fishing with 3 people. My other boat was 18'6" mine new one is 20'2" just needs some TLC from time to time.

Like this guy, I spent over an hour on the water with the previous owner of my 16 year old Scandy White. I ran the heck out of it. I let the guy who bought my old Alumacraft spend as much time as he wanted with it. Wasn't afraid to let him run it hard either. That's the key. If someone will let you really check it out, then it usually turns out OK.

Just make sure you've got the cash to walk away with it!

As stated above, a lake test is NOT a run up the lake & back down & onto trailer. Warm up motor & LOWER UNIT. Run it, drop the TM, run it a few minutes. Crank big motor up & run some more. Repeat several times. I consider a lake test at least 2 hrs.
I have a 98' Triton for sale in the $11,500 to $13,500 range, depending on equipment wanted or not.
i WILL lake test close to my home for a SERIOUS cash in hand buyer only.

Make sure seller has clear titles on hand & have the amount of cash in hand to do the deal. DON'T discuss price until AFTER you've looked at boat to even determine if you even want a lake test. Look it over good. How its was rigged. Ask questions. A lot of questions. Have seller explain how boat was used, maintained, repaired, upgraded, etc etc etc......KNOW what youre buying.
Most sellers dont want to do a lake test till buyer proves they have the money & ready to buy. When buying be courteous enough to show good faith in transaction. Can't blame either seller OR buyer for that.
If they just WON'T do a lake test just walk away from it.
