Some of us will be kayak fishing Naconiche several weeks from now. If any of you can join us, drop me a note and I'll post the dates. I'll just be there either the Saturday or Sunday.

Benny passed along some good "intellegence" that should help me decide what vessel to take. First, he said he just puts his pedal drive up, out of the water. Naconiche is chock full of standing timber, like they impounded it by flooding a forest. That is what it looks like. He said trees are still toppling over as they die, one just missing another in his group last time he was there.

Second, I asked him about tossing something, jigs, etc., to the base of the trees. Benny said he's not sure anything makes it through the branches all the way to the bottom. Okay!

And, the lake has very steep drop-offs from the bank. 10 feet off the bank and you are in 10 feet of water. Cool.

I'll do more research, gather info. I think I am already leaning toward taking my paddle kayak or my Meyers canoe. And, I am narrowing down what presentations I think might work for the lake, leave others behind at home. I don't think I'll be taking anything with treble hooks!

Fished Naconiche from 2 pm until dark today. Hadn't been there since late summer/fall but was curious what was going on. Water was a little messed up from the dying Salvinia which was sprayed at some point last year or earlier this year. Fish still biting. Caught 8 to 17 inches on 5 inch swimbait and weightless flukes. Betweeen losing a few over the logs and not paying attention I lost almost as many. Averted disaster when I tried to block swimbait with my hand as it was headed straight for my face when fish came loose. Luckily the hook didn't bury past barb. Think I could have caught a lot more if I'd stayed with fluke but was looking for some bigger fish.

You definitely want to leave the pedal drive at home. roflmao

Great photos, Iconn4, as usual; and, good info, too.

Wow! Some of your photos really bring home what Benny was saying about leaving the pedal drive up! Heck, I'm bringing my paddle-only (Big Rig) kayak, that, or my canoe to travel and fish tandem . . . if my wild Brazilian nephew-in-law joins me.

Whew! This lake looks so fishy.

I hope you will be able to join us if your schedule allows. Benny and his crowd will be there for 3 days. I'm going to drop down either Saturday 4-14 or Sunday 4-15 arriving whichever day at around 6 AM. I think Naconiche is a bit less that 2 hours from Lake Athens.

It is just a lake that I feel like partnering up on, for sure the first time, having some company . . . safety, knowledge, etc.

You are likely in my same circumstance: just surrounded by beautiful and interesting lakes making it hard to commit to just one, even take a short hour's trip. I can be at so many lakes in 30 minutes it is just ridiculous.

This one, Naconiche, has intrigued me since the first time I found out about it. I have been meaning to go, just never pulled the trigger, then I found out some buddies are going and that sealed the deal.

Well, seals the deal unless we get a call from kids with grandkids needing help (baby sitting)

My wife and I went a couple years ago and stayed in a cabin on the lake. We had access from the owners property and we had a great time fishing but... Looking at Iconn4 pics I see a lot of the trees have broken. When we went out the first day I was paddling through them and some probably stood 50-75 feet above the water while in 20-30 FOW. I was following my wife as we paddle the maze of standing trees and these trees floating lying on their sides. I just passed a huge tree when I heard a loud crack. Next thing I knew my kayak was riding a wave. I turn and that tree had fallen right behind me sideways. It would have crushed one of us if we had been just a few seconds slower. I stayed away from the tall pines after that.

Same report about falling standing timber by Benny H. where I think his son-in-law had one snap off not far from his kayak.

Again, more reason to sort of make certain to go out with a group, stay close, I think.

Impounded in 2009, it'll take years for some of the flooded trees to topple over as they rot/ break off, etc.

I don't want to be under one of them if that happens! We have a governor who can attest to the potential personal damage from falling trees. And, these recent snow and rain events knocked over trees that I think killed several people across the USA.
