Any advice on port A jetties navigation..?
I got myself a new 24" bay boat and this past weekend 02/04 the bays were flat but the fishing was not that great so I thought I will head to the port Aransas jetties and fish the famed jetties that most do not fish. I put in at Marker 37 did a quick look at my graph and it was only an eighteen mile ride I thought no biggie lets go....LOL went through packery channel and headed to oulet, that way did not look too bad until 3/4 of the way there then all of a sudden waves that look like at least 3 ft. started breaking I took one more look and thought no way in heck....I see a lot of post about hitting deep water but there is no way to get out of that channel in a 24' boat... any other navigational advice to get to the jetties....New Boater and I always seek advice from others that are more experienced...Thanks!!!!!

I have gone out the jetties at PA and POC in an 18ft kenner. I'd check for surf reports before going out. I wouldn't do it unless I have 2 strong experienced boaters on board. Furthermore, I've never caught much going out there as I was too cautious to get in close to where it looked like the best places to fish. The waves can be large and an outgoing or incoming tide can be very strong.

In the middle of the summer dog days when the gulf is flat that's different. But now now is the time of year when the weather can change so quickly. Its just not worth it. Sorry to rain on your parade, its just that I learned my lesson the hard way.

Too dangerous in the winter IMO. I'll hit the rigs in my 2201 in the summer when there's several days of calm in the forecast but definitely not with the low water temps and unpredictable winter weather. I'd launch at Dolphin Docks in Port A and hit the jetties from there. You could head north up the intercoastal from Marker 37 to the Port A jetties but it's a bit of a haul and you'd pass up some prime fishing on your way out there!

Thanks guys for all the help I got it I will not try that again...BLUF (bottom line up front). Sorry for the delayed response I have been down fishing the bays trying to learn and find fishing spots. Ironically I will be staying in packery channel housing area for spring break we rented a house 15-18 Mar and will be fishing hard but still trying to find good areas we have kids and lord knows they don't want to fish they want to catch...So I have been down there trying to find easy access and good areas to get the kiddos really interested in fishing...Thanks for all the information and once again sorry for my delayed response.....

You made a good decision turning around mitch. Please give yourself credit for that.

Some good advice has been given.

There is plenty of troutn' red' n - - yep - flounder in the bays right now.

The biggest flounder I have caught in the bays - 27 1/2", was caught in Mesquite Bay back in 1999, over a shallow shell reef, ... in March !

Tim Teal caught this flounder on a quick wade with me Sunday evening on a 1/8 oz. TEXAS RATTLER jig and a Chickeboy 4" shrimp "Chicken of the C" soft plastic in Port Bay, and yep .. it's March !!!

It seems like everytime I look out at the Jetties to fish, it looks nice and calm, until I get closer and closer and realize 3ft waves coming from 3 different directions were hitting my boat at a frequency too quick to be comfortable. I end up leaving, scared and swore off ever doing that again.

Then, the next time I go, I look out there and think.... Humm I can fish the jetties today. WRONG. No more, and this time I mean it smile

One 10-pounder is better than ten 1-pounders; but 100 1-pounders is ok too!
