The other day I invited a friend of mine fishing and when I asked him for gas money, he acted like I was asking for his life savings. We are both in Highschool and I bought my boat with money I have saved over the past couple of years and we both work jobs so I didnt think he would have a problem with it. Am I in the wrong for asking for help with %50 of the fuel? I didn't ask for money for oil or gas for the truck. My boat also has a 2001 Johnson 225 HO so it drinks fuel.

Gas money or just take them for free
single choice

When you invite someone over for dinner do you give them a bill afterwards? Should he have offered? Maybe. Should you have asked? No.

If you invited him, I don't think you should ask for gas money.

I own a boat. Along with many of my friends. No matter what boat we are in it is common knowledge we split cost for the day. I have invited a couple people over the years that don't own a boat. I won't ask for money but if it is not offered at the end of the day... there won't be a second invite.

Tough to ask but I don't fault you for it. As a non boat owner, I don't ever go out fishing with someone without offering or telling them that I'm putting gas in the boat, truck or both depending on how far we go. It's common courtesy. They do not always accept, but the offer ALWAYS needs to be made.

Dang! You invited him, then asked for money. I have a buddy that I take fishing all the time. Sometimes he throws a few buck my way, sometimes he doesn't. I've never even thought about asking him for money. I've always figured I was going anyway why should he have to pay.

If you invited him he should go for free....if he kept pestering you demanding he should go, he should pitch in whatever he can afford.

I bought a boat to use, not to worry about who's giving me gas money. You want to go, hop in, treat my stuff better than your own and catch some dang fish. The guy that's my tourney partner does foot the bill for dinner or other things which I truly don't expect but it's just him being a good dude. The only time I think I may ever ask is if we plan a big trip out of town and we discuss splitting everything, although I don't see that either. I'm blessed enough to own a boat, least I can do is take a few people fishing that don't or can't own one.

I have a neighbor I quit taking as he never offered. Then I mentioned missing out on a offshore trip with a guy because I was not going to go unless I had at least 2-300 to give him for fuel and ice. He asked why and I told him " thats how you dont get re-invited" he stated " what if you dont know to do that" well, thats all I needed to hear!!

I just got on with a new team mate and we took his boat out last month. Prior to the tourney I told him I would pay the entry fee ($25 each) and if he needed gas money, let me know. He told me he had only ran 5-6 gallons out prefishing and covering the entry would suffice, thats how I handled it.

100% agreed!!! I won't ask for gas money, but if they don't at least offer they wont be asked back...

Like many others have said, you invited him so no way you should ask for gas money. Now, if it were me on the other side I would have probably offered some gas money but that is different.

With him pestering you maybe you should have told him about gas up front.
