For me it depends on the situation and the person. also in the situations were I need/want compensation I let the person know up front so they can either back out or agree and we make the trip.

I have a regular fishing buddy and we've been fishing together for quite awhile. He has a boat too, when we go in mine he helps with gas and when we go in his I help with gas. The amount depends on where we go. When he can't go I go alone. If I can't go he usually ask his brother or doesn't go but I'm usually always ready. If I were to invite someone ( it would be someone who knows how to fish and someone I like ) I would not ask for gas money. I'm not poor and I'm not a chicken [censored] but if somebody is pestering me to take him fishing because he's to tight to hire a guide or doesn't want to invest in a boat or buy his own tackle then yeah I'm gonna expect some compensation for taking his tight a$$ fishing and putting up with him backlashing my reels, losing my lures and jack knifing my trailer on the ramp. Now if you think I'm wrong that's your problem not mine. soldier

Since money is tight, tell people up front that boats & tow trucks use a lot of fuel and ask them to pitch in. For folks that don't have a clue, it's a good idea to fill up the truck and boat at the first station after you leave the house, then fill both up afterwards. They are usually shocked at how much fuel was used. At least this way, they know what was used. And they don't have to pay for boat, oil and insurance.

I figure I'm going fishing anyways, so no need to give gas money. However, I do remember what it was like when I was young....friends would take advantage. I don't think it was intentional.

Common courtesy and gratitude dictates you kick in when someone else is driving or your using their boat.

Most people I know are conscientious and will either offer to give me money, or pay for entrance fee and or lunch. I probably wouldnt put them on my call list for a long time if they didnt offer anything though.

If he was pestering you to take him fishing, nothing wrong with asking him to split the gas. Just talk it out and let him know you are looking for guys who will split expenses when taking trips. At your age, it's not you responsibility to pay for everyone's time on the water. Heck, you are supplying the boat ... your friends should kick in to help cover what it cost to enjoy a day of fishing.

The solution to any problem - work, love, money, whatever - is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be. --John Gierach

Set exspectations at the start... then ppl can make the choice. I will often top off buddies gas on a big trip, or pay for meals if he brings boat

I never ask my buddies for gas money if were fun fishing, I would be going whether someone goes with me or not. If they offer it, I do accept. If we were planning a long trip, we would discuss prior.

Tournament situations, we always talk prior and split costs.
