So I have an older boat and I know the shine is on it's way out. In some spots it still looks new, where the sun does not beat it up all day, but in others it is worse. If I wash the boat to clean it, and then wax it.. it looks great for like a day, and then it gets this white film as it sits in the sun.. what am I doing wrong, anyone know? Here is a pic. Looking for any tips, products, techniques or anything like that.. it is a boat and a fishing boat at that so I can't poor hundreds into cosmetics, but would like to make it look decent.. or at least without that film. It actually looked better before I did anything to it lol.

It's oxidation. You need to wet sand it and then buff and polish to restore the gelcoat.
Research the process, bassboatcentral has some good info on it. Start with 800 grit, then 1000, then 1200, then probably 1500 grit wet sand paper. Then buff it with a polish and sealant. Protec makes a good kit.
Prepare for a lot of work.

I know this is a bit of an old post but I worked on the gelcoat on my boat this past weekend. The gelcoat on the center console was particularly oxidized I picked up a cheap variable speed 7" rotary buffer from harbor freight and some white buffing pads. I used Aquabuff 1000 and ran it at about 2500 rpm. I still plan to polish with 2000 and wax it but it didn't take much time at all to restore the original color. Look 1000x better with just the 1000. I still have to do the leaning post which wont be fun due to access.

1500 grit wet sand until the surface feels smooth. Then hit it with some 3M heavy duty rubbing compound using a quality wool pad. Then finish with a good wax. Worked for me.
