All lakes is a very broad statement...
Where are you located? The spawn is just now getting underway on tawakoni...
Best way to find out is head to your closest lake or creek that empties into a lake and get after it

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Interesting question..fishing for the next month will be up shallow and personal....it is what you make it....shallow depth depends on the clarity of the water, among other things...personal fishing depth willl depend on how shallow you are willing and able to fish. Personally, I fish in water 5 foot and less this time of year. Others fish from 5-to 10 feet, as theyre equipment/health/attitude will not allow them to fish shallower than that. Still others will not fish shallower than 10 feet during this time of year, for various reasons, they can best explain.

I personally have been catching crappie, almost exclusively, on the bank (in holes) and in shallow logjams or treetops for the last three months and exclusively in the creeks. I expect that trend to continue for the next month, on several lakes, although, I will assuredly move to different creeks, on different lakes. Also, I will go back to past creeking areas and start following the crappie out of the creeks and back into the lake, while others will still be fishing shallow on the lake, wondering when the spawn will happen.

Basically, not all crappie spawn at the same time even on the same lake. They spawn in waves, based on their own biological clock, the moon phase, etc. So dont worry, keep fishing. The spawn is happening, at various depths, on many lakes and it will continue for the next month.

I wont get into it much, but I fish the spawn beginning in January and dont quit that pattern until May. Afterwards, I go into middepth evening and nighttime fishing pattern until August. Then, I pay my taxes and after Oct 15, go into a fall strategy of fishing under 10 feet again and following the crappie from the lakes into the creeks. It works for me, on the lakes I fish, and it seldom works for anyone else on here, for many reasons. Just remember, the crappie are where you find them, and some people find them only deep, or shallow, or both...it depends on your equipment and where you fish for them, the lakes, the creeks, associated with those lakes etc.,good luck and keep fishing...

Based on the forecast. There will be a big push of shallow fish by this weekend. Several days in the 80s and nights in the 60s with one night showing 70. That kind of warm will move them up in a big way. I have seen it in years past that a few warm days and nights like that will bring the water up 10 degrees and fish will move up overnight and be done in a few days.

Most of the crappie I'm catching are staging or spawning. 10' of water or less.

I have filleted a few females that were almost finished spawning.

I live east of you along I-20.

Theyre just now barely getting started in DFW, and I mean barely, Ive caught a few black crappie in war paint, but the females have a ways to go, and white crappie are behind them.

Totally confused now? Remember, when in doubt, go fishing and find out!
