Will be camped at McCown Valley next weekend with my brother and our cousin. Would like to spend some of our time trying for some nice blues. Anybody catching any out of Whitney right now? Would appreciate any information about current water temps, depths and patterns?

In case you don't know about my Catfish Calendar (see the thread for 2018), as to weekend of Sat/Sun (24/25), it goes like this---
Fri (23rd)- ZIP
Sat (24th)- YC
Sun (25th)- YC
Mon (26th)- ZIP

On YC days, the Blues bite pretty good, not just not full out as they do on BC.

As to my PYC (Lynn's Personal YellowCat days) dates, they are 24/25/26. So you may encounter, depending upon where, what bait, and times, as to catching some Yellows as well.

April Moon phases in that time frame are ...
17th- New Moon
24th- 1st Qtr
31st- Full Moon

Oh, almost forgot, you can also try some of those sour gummy worms out for Blues. Tom, El Gato & Finfeather never did note if they were also great in early Spring when temps were cooler. I may have the brand name listed in the 2017 thread. A qwik glance did not find it thru my massive archives here.

If you are setting lines out, you can set out Friday PM, so it is ready for them Sat. AM.

Fish shallow flooded brush/ dead grass.

Thanks Mike! I was hoping someone would tell us to go shallow. Have a couple spots in mind already.

Was catching them in 3' of water in the river last week. Went striper fishing yesterday and caught eater blues in 50' of water. These fish confuse me. Shallow is where it's at for the drag peelers right now.

That narrows it down some. We will avoid water over 50' deep haha.

OK, I looked back & also see I noted Finfeather instead of "LittleFeather", as to the Gummy worms. Here is a little research clip on which ones to get:

I found them at Wal-Mart in Bryan (off Briarcrest) after work either on August 15th or 16th. First I had to find where they moved the candy stash. Coming in the main entrence aisle on the Grocery side, head down it towards the back, until you get to the candy stash aisle on your right. I forget which side they are on in that row.

The brand name is "Trolli". Item name is "Sour Brite Crawlers". Also noted up top as "America's Best Selling Gummi Worm". They are in a 4 oz. bluish plastic bag noting about 3.5 servings per bag. A serving is 8 worms. So about 28 worms per bag. They were $1.74 per bag at Wal-Mart.

Curtis (on TFF- "Littlefeather") said to be sure & get the sour ones, as perhaps the salt or whatever is what really makes them work.

I also noticed that the 2nd & 3rd bag only cost $1 each though, as per my receipt. They must have had a special or something.

You can get them at other places, but might be more expensive. Also, don't get the "mini" ones. As they will melt in warmer than 89 degree water. Chris (TFF- "El Gato Azul") made up some sort of "harness" to keep them wired on the hook as they were melting pretty fast.

Let me see if I can find the webpage where they posted the story & the pic of the Blue that got "raked" (almost eaten) by the bigger one. You can also see all of the gummi worms in its stomach. Look thru this thread for the pic & their adventure back on the 12th of August. Littlefeather only brought one bag of gummi worms.

Thinks Lynn, only problem with the Gummy Worms is I will end up eating all the bait and after the sugar rush I'll need a nap.

The flats between McCown and the state park is where I used to float jugs. Get plenty blues between 1 1/2-5#. The flat right before you go into Frazier Creek(State Park boatramp) as you are coming from McCown has always been my best place to float about 25 jugs. Set the lines where they are no longer than 5' and never went home empty, 80% of them were blues and the rest channels. The flat closest to McCown are really good for channels but look at a map and see where the many channel cuts are(about 2'-3' deeper than surrounding water). Have caught every kind of gamefish out of there. Best fishing trip my wife ever had throwing a 1/3oz. Little Cleo all day long. Caught many sandies, stripers, largemouth up to 6 pounds and 2 of the prettiest smallmouths that looked like twins and both were over 5#. I finally tied one on myself after about 4 hours and immediately caught 2 big chanelcats, of all things. That was the same day she hung up and I tried to get it unhung and impaled my knee with the treble. Cut the hooks and pushed the business ends out and put her a new treble on it and kept on truckin. Took her almost an hour to get over that, but, she went on to have a great evening catching sandies and stripers till dark.
I believe the reason the flat near the S.P. is extra good is because shad are blown into it from the south wind, all those flats do but this one is kinda cut off from the rest and doesn't have near the timber in it as the others. My second favorite little cove flat on that lake. Not telling my favorite but, it is about 5 miles by water north of that one. Hope ya'll have a blast. McCown is my favorite park there.
