Planning 4- or 5-day long weekend in Galveston with the Gkids. Aside from rods, reels, hooks and lures, what other gear is recommended for fishing on the jetties (no boat)?

Fishing, a man knows a serenity of soul and peace of mind that he finds in doing nothing else, and it makes no difference whether or not he catches anything. The mind of a true fisherman is not on petty subjects.

Just don't step on the algae, step on clean rock or where waves expose the grit of the rock. That said, traction certainly helps.

Bring some bandaids and anti bacterial ointment for the kids, there are barnacles and the rock edges and invariably anyone can stumble and get a little cut or scrape.

I personally keep it simple, go as light as you can with gear. I tend to take a back pack, stringer, rods, ect. and forego the heavier items.

If you plan on fishing on the bottom, bring plenty of weights and hooks. A long stringer will be needed to keep your fish.

One 10-pounder is better than ten 1-pounders; but 100 1-pounders is ok too!
