After about a year of sitting in the water in my slip, I finally purchased a boat lift. I am planning to pull my boat out of the water to give it a good cleaning after the lift is installed. Besides a power washer, what do you guys use to get off all that junk growing on the bottom of the boat? I am hoping to power wash as much of that grim off as I can before scrubbing the rest by hand. Then give it a good wax job.

I have never used it but a friend that leaves one in a slip told me that the slr will take it off.... That is the stuff used to take tarnish off plumbing fixtures.

i'd power wash it real good and then do a double dose of "the werks". you can get it at Wal Mart. you'll need to wax the hull too.

Do you mean CLR? Is that safe to use on the lake? I will be washing the boat at my house and the storm drainage drains into our neighborhood pond, which is across the street from me. i'd power wash it real good and then do a double dose of "the werks". you can get it at Wal Mart. you'll need to wax the hull too. With "CLR" or "the Works" do you soak the area real good and let it sit a bit then wipe? Does that algea come off real easy with either of these products? Definitely wax after I get all the junk off.

I finally got my boat lift installed today. I am unable to clean the bottom if mybboat until April 16th. Should I still leave my boat in the water until it's clean or will it be ok out of the water? I was afraid if the [censored] growing in the bottom of my boat dries, it'll be more difficult to clean.

Cool i got alot of that stuff. Would it be easier to clean if I leave my boat in the water for now until I clean it in 11 days?

The Works at Walmart is some awesome stuff, I use on a lot more than the toilet. I use on the shower head, dog water bowls, plastic buckets that have calcium deposits, faucet screens, etc. Highly recommend

Couple of squirts of this, let it sit for a minute then wash off with a pressure washer.

Cigga: Definitely leave it in the water until you're ready to clean it. Dried green scum is many times harder to remove than wet. Be prepared to do a lot of scraping, even with the chemicals and "removers". IslandJim

Starbrite Hull cleaner. It's an acid, but it makes it stupid simple to clean. Be sure and give the hull a fresh wax job to preserve that clean hull.
The best and cheapest way is to buy oxalic acid in powder form and mix yourself. That's the same ingredient in the Starbrite Hull Cleaner. You can get it on EBay and Amazon and there are several You Tube videos on how to mix and apply. I use a pump-up sprayer to apply. If you add a few drops of dishwashing detergent to the mix, it will help it stay on the hull and work its magic.
With the acid and power washer, you can get it as clean as the day the hull came out of the mold. It doesn't harm the fiberglass.

But the hydro hoist guy called me the following day and recommend me to just keep it out of the water for now. Then 1 or 2 days prior to my planned cleaning, lower it into the water and it should be fine. Thanks for the advice everyone. Despite already bought couple bottles of the works, I decided to use Hull Cleaner by starbrite. Few guys at the docks advised against using products that aren't specifically made for boats. Ill try to post a before and after pic when done.

When you get through that $12 bottle of Starbrite and see that it hasn't put a dent in removing all the scum just remember you already have the $2 bottle of works that will do the job Starbrite couldn't.

I finally got to clean my boat today. Powerwasher it down really good then I started out using the starbrite hull cleaner. Initially was very impressed. Sprayed, let it soak for a few mins then power wash it off. Repeated a few times. It got alot of the gunk off but there were still some of the heavy junk still wouldn't come off. Even with a scrubbing sponge with very firm pressure. After using half of the 32oz bottle of hull cleaner, I decided to try the works. And the works did it. Still had to scrub but almost everything came off. Spent all day today cleaning the bottom of the boat. Still need to wax it. Will do that tomorrow along with a little more scrubbing underneath the boat in the rear. Really tough for a 6 ft 2 in, 220 lb guy to crawl under there.
