In 1988-89 tagging was done on fish over 10 lb . Of the tagged fish re-caught nearly all were in the area from where they were first caught. One of them was 22 miles away in Birch a week later.

tournament fishing has been going on for almost 50 years now and our fishing is as good or better than it ever was...lakes go through up and down cycles butif tournaments had an adverse effect on fishing,we would have ruyined our lakes long ago....
another factor is I read someplace that every year, bass produce millions of fry over what the lake can sustain..

Sure it has an effect. If one fish that would have spawned doesn't spawn it makes a difference. The question has always been does it make a big enough difference to effect the quality of the fishery.

Very little impact, if it did Toledo and Rayburn would suck. Now if they get filleted it will have an impact. The amount of bass getting caught off beds this time of year is staggering.

100% of the big bass that get the knife do not have productive spawns, if you want to target a "group" target the meat hunters

I tournament fish some here and there (not much since having a 3 year old) so wasnt targeting anyone.. was a question just looking for different opinions and perceptions. Now do I think any blow joe can go catch spawning bass? Hell yes I do. I look forward to fishing the spawn every year just like everyone else, but was curious on how relocation effected the reproduction. Thanks for all the replies!

I have seen some sketchy peeps "bed fishing" with cast nets before, so you are correct anyone can do it

Genuine question, Has there ever been a lake in Texas where the Black Bass population was destroyed by tournament anglers?

My opinion on the matter is this: Over the last 80 years largemouth bass have been introduced into the lakes and rivers of almost every state because of their recreational value. Its true that some fish die after weigh in but the fact of the matter is their overall population has grown exponentially due to the industry they support. Bass are an intensively managed resource and anglers must abide by the laws and regulations that govern the sport. I'm licensed, I pay my taxes.... If I see a fish on a bed I'm going to set the hook and give her a ride.

I would think that 75% of bedding fish never see a bait,Some deep and in jungles that boats can't reach. I have fished for fish on beds in 20' of water on Amistad and PK years ago when PK was clear and those were small mouth on PK.

Rayburn has had high water last 4 spawns. 80% won't see a bait this year I bet while spawning. High water does amazing things for a fishery

Another thing to consider is the location of the lake. A lake in Texas or Florida probably will see near zero impact, while northern lakes along the Canadian border might see more of an impact. I know when I fish in Ontario, fish are protected during the spawn and you can't even target them.
