The F4F Wildcat found on the sunken USS Lexington was flown by the famous Butch O'Hare!

Butch O'Hare was a Medal Of Recipient and The US Navy's first Ace (Ace in a Day!) when he shot down six (I think) Japanese bombers coming after his ship. He was shot down on the first Navy night fighter mission (Hellcat) in the Pacific. Many feel a Japanese bomber tail gunner may have killed him. He was never found.

O'Hare International in Chicago is named after him, a replica of his plane sits in one of the terminals. Saw it several times as a kid.

It looks like the markings and Felix the Cat Id'ed it. Internet historians were all over it when the pic came out.

I had the same question.

Did the Lexington sink first, then butch got shot down and his plane happened to sink right on top of the ship?

The Lexington? Isn't that docked in Corpus Christi? I'm pretty certain I took a tour of it when I was a kid.

The Lexington in Corpus was named after the one in the op which was destroyed by the Japanese during the Battle of the Coral Sea.

I think it went that Butch survived the Coral Sea battle but his plane didn't. He was flying a night mission off USS Enterprise when his F6F Hellcat was shot down November 26 1943.

The Navy will use famous Ship names more than once. A new Enterprise is being built right now.

Blessings to our military, past and present.

Addendum: The ex-Civil War vets who later went west to fight in the Indian wars is a tough one for me, but I know they were America's military, and they were ordered to go fight, but look who they were fighting.

Blessings to our military regardless, and cool thing finding the plane.

...!

I was wrong about a "Replica" of his plane at O'Hare. It was an identical model pulled from Lake Michigan and restored. Lots of planes in that lake, but that is a thread by itself.

Is that mark in front of the Japanese Imperial Flag a designation for sinking a ship?

That's why it's called the Grey Ghost. The Japanese knew they had sunk it but they made another one and the Japanese saw it again and freaked, something along those lines. That's my Cliff Notes version for you.

The is not O'Hares plane in the picture of the sunken Lexington, it is probably Noel Gayler's Wildcat. This is what is circulating around with a bunch of my friends that are aviation and military buffs that have been studying it since the pictures surfaced.
As for the Felix the Cat identifying it, the whole squadron had that insignia on their planes, O'Hare's plane had 5 Zero flags and no ship kill emblems when he was shot down. This is why most are saying it's Gayler's plane, some are say Thach's plane, but they are sure it is not O'Hares.
