This has the ring of truth to it. Tell me it ain't so.

I watched a 5-hour documentary yesterday called "The Building of the 777"

The show covered the entire 777 program from Day 1 to delivery of airplane #1 to the airlines.

Somewhere in the middle of the show they were interviewing Boeing's chief test pilot -- the first man to fly a 777..

It is interesting the way they did things. The 777 cockpit was ready a year before the engines and airframes, so to test the cockpit instruments and flight controls they took an old 757 and stripped the 757 cockpit down to bare metal. Then they installed the 777 cockpit in the front of the 757 and hooked it up... they flew it around for a year or so while they worked the bugs out.

The Chief test pilot said this to the reporter:

To fly a 777 you only need one pilot and a dog. The dog is there to bite the pilot if he touches the controls. The pilot is there to feed the dog
