Needs some thoughts and suggestions from some of you engine savvy individuals. I have a 2 stroke Yamaha VZ300TR, while on plane yesterday the low oil alarm sounded and the engine decelerated. I was able to idle after that, but could not go above 1000 rpms and the alarm would go off. I was not low on oil in either the main oil reservoir, nor the remote one in the engine itself. I verified I was not overheating as I had a steady stream of water discharge from the motor.

I did pull the oil filter and did not see anything that would indicate a clog or it being dirty. The oil looked good as well. I verified no kink in the hose that goes from the main reservoir to the remote reservoir in the engine. I did not see any hose issue under the cowling either.

So, needs to ideas on what else to check or what I can do to get the motor to be able to run again without issue. As soon as I go past 1000rpms, the alarm goes off. Once I slow back down to idle it goes off. Not really sure where to go from here except take it in and am hoping to figure it out without spending hundreds of dollars.

it is possible that the oil level sensor on the tank on the motor is bad. other than that if you could find someone to hook it up to a computer it should tell whats going on.

I had a similar problem on a Yamaha 150. After putting up with it for a long time, I finally called Rockwall Marine and now I have an appointment for next week. They said there are two sensors that are suspect, but can only diagnose for sure with a thorough test. A couple of years ago, I checked on the price for the sensors (parts only, no labor). They were about $300 for the pair, but there are other problems that could be causing the low oil light and the rpm failsafe. At that price, it's not worth me trying to replace parts till I find one that solves the problem. I've had work done at Rockwall before and they are good about getting it fixed right in a very reasonable time. So, I be back on the water shortly.

I talked with a guy at one of the Yamaha service centers. He stated it could be either of the sensors, or wiring issue. I have it there now. They said they could hook the computer up to it and figure it out.

The service center hooked the motor up to the computer. Found 41 overheats, no oil alarms. Spark plugs are fouled. So they are going to look at the impeller and clean carbs and replace the plugs.

In my case, not an oil flow issue, but an overheating issue but would not have detected it without the computer as no other indicators alarmed to point to overheating.

Update: They just called back and the oil pump and filter were bad, so there was an issue there after all.
