J-moe I did not have anything to weigh the big one. All I know is the walk back from Newman's Bottom was hell with that stringer. My shoulder still hurts. Hope the rain does not disturb things to much. My cousin Troy Eller and I are going tomorrow. Gotta go when the fish are there. You never know when it will be over. We are one big flood from the run being over. Will report what we catch tomorrow afternoon.

Does anybody else get annoyed about the unpredictability of fishing for spawning White Bass? I have had some amazing days, but also plenty of days catching next to nothing. Sometimes it seems easier to target crappie or black bass.

I agree jsinn. Of all the years I have been fishing the Yegua I have only caught more than 15 a handful of times. I have made the hour and a half trip from Leander many times and have not caught anything. So I chose to really soak in how great those good days are like yesterday. If I lived closer and had a more flexible schedule I definitely could tip the scales in my favor to have more trips that were successful.

Had a buddy fish there today and he limited out pretty quick. He had to take a break once when the rain came and then went back out and finished up.

I took the drive up to the Yegua in January of this year and didnt catch a single fish of any species. I went on Presidents Day this month and struck gold. With a busy schedule it is hard to make the trip for me. I really wanted to get out yesterday but couldnt find the time. There have been sometimes in previous years when I couldnt make it until late March and the run was over but fortunately the black bass were biting. I hope to find property in the area so I can escape more on the weekends. I love fishing those creeks!! Did you catch any yesterday Jason?
It was a different world when we were boys and girls....

I usually target the crappie more than I do the white bass.

He didn't mention that, but I'm guessing the Yegua. I am thinking about a trip that way today myself. Catch and release is all I will be doing though. I still have a ton of fish in the freezer from last year. I need to start giving it away to make room for new, because my freezer is full.

Catching a limit of these fish is a hit or miss deal. I've seen it on fire one day and cold as ice the next. Crazy I know. But they are in there and finding a few hot spots is really the deal. You can move fifty yards to another hole and pull out a limit some times. Crazy how they will stack up in a hole. And if someone else has fished that hole dry, you're not going to pull very many out of a hole someone just depleted. I'm sure that's why you see big stringers early in the morning, most holes have filled up with new fish. The moon is just right for these guys to be traveling upstream at night. I realize there hasn't been much light from the moon, but the gravitational pull from the moon still gets them on the move. If we can get a few clear skies at night, the moon light would allow a lot more to migrate upstream than we are seeing right now. A good flow of muddy water would be best, it really brings them upstream.

I think you all might agree that this amount of rain we have received is enough to kick the fishing up a notch without washing away the opportunity to get at them.
If looked at from the fishes (whitebass) perspective more flowing water is better for spawning and inversely anything that reduces their numbers (like over fishing) will curb the success of the spawn.
Where lake Somerville is concerned it would be nearly impossible to adversely affect the crappie/whitebass population by legal fishing means but Mother Nature, man-made environmental issues and illegal fishing methods could destroy the whole lake & fishery in an instant.
Looking back over the history of the Yegua it is very clear to me that the annual springtime harvest of crappie and whitebass has never had any long term affect on the overall health of the fishery. So fill your freezer with fresh fish and be thankful for the opportunity. Play by the rules, be respectful of others and the environment so this great fishery can last for many future generations of fishermen.

Will said Ben. My Cuz Jon Luxe and I went out today. Started out at Nails Creek at day break. There was a lot of fish there but the were not biting because they were to busy chasing each other around. We spent about 20 minutes there and caught 1 each. So we decide to over to Newman's Bottom and it was hot there. I caught 50 plus fish and my Cuz caught 30 plus fish. They are there go get them while you can.
