Well, the teenager has started the enlistment process. He's taken the ASVABAND physical'd for the Air Force. He had his heart set on becoming a TACP, but couldn't pass the depth perception test. So he's enlisting to become a PJ. I'm so very proud of this kid. Hug em tight fellas.....they grow up fast.

In 1984 when I was at MEPS, I could not pass this test either. The doctor tried several different things but I could not see/pass the test. Doctor asked me how bad I wanted to go into the Air Force. I told him I want to join very bad. He marked my med record as a pass for the test.

First off thanks and congratulations for your boy, Moto. Those PJ's are a badarse group. You'll never hear anyone talk down on a PJ - no matter their MOS or branch of service.

Second - please allow me to give a little enlistment advise. When I first signed on, I had the intention of becoming a PJ. This was almost 20 years ago, so it might have changed since then. You could not get a "guaranteed" slot as a PJ or combat controller. You had to pass the physical during basic, and then that would guarantee your slot.

Well my ASVAB was such that I was qualified for any job in the AF. My recruiter convinced me to sign up as "open" and not lock myself into a specific MOS in the event I didn't make a PJ. Long story short, somewhere during basic I decided not to pursue the PJ's. That left me in an open slot and I had no control over what my job was going to be. In the end I got pretty lucky with AGE, but it could have meant I spent 4 years as a gas monkey.

Make sure he selects a job that he likes should he not make the PJ's. They have something like a 90% attrition rate (even higher than SEALS) so just make sure your bases are covered.
