What do ya'll think? Propane smoker or a Traeger? I won't use it for anything but smoking meat. My current grill gets really hit (600+) for steaks and such....Is a Traeger overkill?

If you don't mind reloading the chips the propane is good. I'm lazy so the pellet smoker was a fit

I have a little gas smoker that I like. I can throw some meat in it and walk away for 45 minutes then reload with some wood for another 45 minutes or so. Very portable to take camping or hunting and fishing trips.

Dave, your last name is Egge, which is close to Egg. I feel like its destiny you end up with a Big Green Egg.

Traeger 100%... my parents got me one for Christmas. The only thing is, if you leave the grill unattended for over an hour, the pellets will get hung up and wont gravity feed to the auger thus shutting down the grill. Other than that, it beats the hell out of anything else on the market.

It's not a Traeger, but I've had a Pit Boss 820D for a couple of months now and our family loves it. I don't think I've cook a bad meal on it yet.

RecTec pellet smoker. www.rectecgrills.com The temp holds spot on....usually +/-5 degrees. One of the biggest complaints about traeger is the huge temp swings. The controller on the RecTec is just awesome. The Rec Tec has a large enough hopper for long smokes. It is truly a set it and forget it smoker. Plus they are stainless steel. No rusting out. The RecTec will also run hot enough to sear/grill. Most pellet smokers wont. I spent 6 months researching every major brand of pellet smoker there is... I bought a Rec Tec. I am not a paid sponsor :-) Just a very happy Rec Tec owner. Bryan p.s. Their customer service is phenomenal.

Some pretty incredible meat from that though... I just looked at Traegers site. You can buy a large BGE with everything you need for approx the same price as the pro series 22 Traeger, which is $800. No way Id buy pellet grill at that price when I could get a BGE or Kamado Joe with everything you need for smoking at the same price.

I don't trust what goes into those pellets. Could be anything from rat droppings, everyday dust-dander to cedar. Who knows? I'm very happy with my #2 model from https://www.smokin-it.comBGE's are nice too, they just don't jive with my choice of smoking.
Some folks mouths, flat out runs their minds.

I have a Traeger. I have probably had it for ten years. Its good. The downsides are it doesnt get as hot as charcoal if you want to sear. (I have a Weber gas grill, and Weber charcoal also.). The other downside is that I dont have what the awesome people have.

I like my Traeger because I can use it for a oven in the summer and don't have to babysit it.
