I think we were RIGHT THERE in the DFW lakes when the bass were just about in pre-spawn mode. Now we’ve got cold weather and cold rain (lots of it) for an extended period of time. I’m taking notes here for future reference - in your experience how do you find this particular weather effecting the fish this close to the pre-spawn? Did they go right back into winter mode or are they still moving shallow but finding those deeper creeks to hunker down in for a while?

If you can't find em wind em.

There are always fish pre spawn in most of Texas lakes. Regardless of how cold it is. Rayburn gets down to 41-43 degrees still catch some in 4ft

The longer days affect the fish staging way more than water temperature. Water temperature has some to do with t, but longer days are the green lights for fish staging

No. Maybe it’s semantics but I break late winter and spring into 3 categories : pre-spawn, spawn, post spawn. I have mainly been on Lewy this year and they have been in winter mode even as of a little over a week ago. With rising temps and longer days now I expect them to start becoming more actively feeding in getting ready for the spawn and I consider this pre-spawn territory. Disagree?

Weather fronts and surging temps always have them moving in and out, every Spring, but I believe there is no way those big females are going to drop their eggs until the temp is right , for them, on that day. The length of days, moon phase, along w/temp, affect their movements, (staging), before the actual spawn. Also, the water clarity obviously determines how the shallows warm up and hold heat, throughout each day.

I haven’t used any electronics in about 2-3 weeks now... are there still gonna be some deep? Yes.. are there gonna be some shallow? Yes. Some bass live shallow year round... I’ve been catching females in shallow spawning areas full of eggs. They are roaming... also depends on the lake in my opinion. Water temp doesn’t play as big of a role as some would think in my opinion. Totality of the circumstances.

The biggest bass in the lakes are up shallow right now. Some already on beds whether you can see them or not. Maybe not the big wave but the biggest girls. They just seem to always be the early ones to me
