I want a disconnect switch to cut power to my trolling motor to protect it while charging my batteries.
I have 2 12 volt batteries wired in series so only one positive and one negative wire run to the front of the boat.
What battery disconnect switch do I need and how would I hook it up?

Is your trolling motor hard wired or does it have a plug at the bow?

My trolling motor has a plug but I was thinking that a switch might be more convenient and less wear and tear on the plug than unplugging the motor each time

I use one of the breaker/ cut off switches. Mount it near the batteries

Depends on how elaborate (translates to expensive) you want to go. A Breaker with the on/off function will work great. A simple key activated that you can find at Harbor Freight works well to disconnect, or you can go with a Blue Seas or Perko if you want to spend the extra $$'s

Disconnect the + red wire that goes to trolling motor. Connect to switch. From the other side of switch go to battery. You should already have a breaker on that wire, leave it where it is. My choice is a Perko on- off switch.
I forgot to mention, all this is done in the battery compartment. Good luck.

Kinda hard to see in these pics but I made a polypropylene board and added three switches (cranking/TM/FF and bubblier) along with terminal blocks/fuses/battery tender/bubblier and attached it in the battery compartment. Makes it real easy to power everything off when I am charging my batteries and I never will have a dead battery because I left something on.

I put this back by my motor it is a cut off for BOTH the tm and crank battery for me..

I cut the flange off so it was round and looked better.
