We rolled 180K on the truck last week. Give it 10 years and I may replace it.

I replace trucks every 10 years. Perform Normal maintenance & you shouldn't have any major expenses...tires, batteries & oil changes.
Usually get 4 or $5,000.00 at that point. Sell out right to an individual.
His cost & expenses would be a lot higher.

How would his costs and expenses be higher? All he would ever have to do is 2 oil changes a year. Hell never buy tires, never replace an alternator, never do a brake job, etc. I will use myself as an example to the OPs question. Im leasing a 2017 Tundra 5.7 crewmax. The truck has an MSRP of around $42k. I put zero down and have 36 payments of 441 a month. I will pay $15876 over 36 months. That works out to $5292 a year. And thats after interest and tax, title and license. I will never spend a dime on this truck as Toyota will cover the oil changes. When the lease is up I will do it all over again. The difference in me and the man in the example is I didnt have to pay 40k up front to get here. I work in the finance offfice of an automobile dealership. I know and expect Toyota to call me 6 months prior to lease termination and offer to put me in another Tundra for the same payment if I will trade it in. So yes, you can drive a new truck for 5k a year

Well if you trade every 5 years on a $50,000 truck and get 20k for your trade in and finance 30k you pay around $500/month. So really it is costing him no more money to drive a one year old truck than you guys who trade every 5 years. I personally pay cash for clunkers and don't have payments just higher maintenance costs. But I am young and kinda enjoy working on cars and stuff. I am sure when I am older I will own more reliable vehicles I don't have to work on all the time.

It still is costing you $5000 a year to drive it, $55000 initial cost 10 years and sell it for $5000

Never out of debt. May as well lease. My first thought as well this is exactly the type of person that leasing makes sense.

I think you're neighbor is paying more than 5k per year for a new truck every year. Much more.
I don't think many people buy year old trucks for 5 thousand less than a new truck. How can anyone sell them back for that minus taxes? With rising truck costs they would have to sell them back for close to what they bought them for.

Yeah hes feeding you a line. I buy low mile used trucks for work. I can assure you they lose way more than five grand the first year. Closer to fifteen.

So yes, you can drive a new truck for 5k a year I bought your Tundra for $33,600 at the end of the year. That included tax, title & license. Toyota had 0% financing for 5 years. 33,600 - 5,000 (sale after 10 years) = 28,600 / 120 months = $238.33. Granted there will be a couple of sets of 20" tires in there at $1,000.00 a set along the way
