are they gonna die because I didn't let it settle? As long as you used something to get the chlorine out they should be fine.

btw, its cycle. not settle. your gonna go through some spikes in ammonia then nitrites, and a lot of cloudy water. the cycle takes 6 weeks. you have to build up enough beneficial bacteria to maintain water quality.

I would dump about a table spoon of ammonia in it daily. After about four to six weeks it should be ready for the fish.

Modern water treatments say they can have water ready in just a few hours. Had to do a move, drain and deep clean on the 10 gal tank in my Wife's office yesterday and the fish seemed pretty happy.

When I was less experienced I would just put water in the tank, add a few drops of conditioner, and put in the fish. After a month or so I would get nasty water and might lose a fish or two but then it would clear up and be ok. Now I'm into salt water tanks and you must do a cycle or you'll have weird and terrible algae outbreaks and loose expensive fish or corals. There is nothing wrong with speeding up the cycle with ammonia or a throw away fish. 6 weeks is a ball park figure. It can take anywhere from two weeks to six months for a cycle to start.

Get you a handfull of the $0.10 goldfish and put them in on day 3 or 4. That speeds the cycle times as much as anything. If they don't make it, they have still helped your tank. If they do make it, then so be it.

Ive stocked a 46 gallon with ~20 and a 100 gallon with ~40 african cichlids the same day I set them up. I used bio-spira to establish a bacteria colony. I did see a mini spike in ammonia, but didnt lose any fish either time.
Let a co worker take care of my fish while on vacation last summer. Overfed and stopped up filters and had huge fish kill. Think 8-10 survived.
Undecided if i want to restock or sell setup.
100 gallon with holy rock and 2 Marineland C-360 cannister filters with tons of spare filtration material if anyone is interested.
