Any ponds or small lakes in McAllen I can bank or kayak? I’m heading to town tomorrow and thought I’d take my gear if there’s any place worth going.

You can try the pond and Firemans park or pond at the convention center. Both places hold bass but they are heavily pressured. You might also want to check out the Boat Show going on at the convention center from 12-6pm on Sunday. It is catered to inshore fishing but might find some lures you can use for bass. I know DOA lures will be there and they have recently added bass lures to their arsenal.

Two referrals to Fireman’s pond. I see it’s in the middle of the city. I bet it does get pressured. Is it catch and release? Too many small city ponds get fished out from people keeping them.
What about the lake at the north end of the airport, the pond behind Home Depot, or the two in La Joya? Any word on those?
Thanks for the help!

North McAllen Lake James private lake, Lahoya lakes North side of highway Private fishing club lake, The one behind Whataburger on the south side is a private lake . Anzalduas Park south of Mission has river fishing on the Rio Grande River has a boat ramp & dock you can fish from. It's also free on weekdays The valley shows a lot of water on goggle but a lot is private. Tight Lines.

When I lived here, we went to RGC to fish the river. I wouldn't advise it these days.

I hear the canals are supposed to be off limits too?

Rio Grande River, aka Rio Bravo, launch at Anzaldous county park, or launch at Chimney Park RV Park, no bank fishing. $5.00 launch fee. Self pay envelope at office. Plenty of protection with Border Patrol, Game Wardens, and sometimes overzealous DPS monster river boats (Beware of the wake). Fishing varies, sometimes sorta strong current. Check out: https://www.ibwc.gov/Water_Data/Reports/RG_Flow_data.html. As for Falcon, check http://www.tackleandrods.com/lake/flash.htmJames writes some amusing reports! Observe 30 mph speed limit in city of La Joya! As for as La Joya Lake, there is a 5 year waiting list to join. give us a report!

As for as La Joya Lake, there is a 5 year waiting list to join. You can't fish there except as a member, or with a member. It's locked!

is it that good? just curious. It is real good at times, like anywhere else. Lots of bass up to 3-4 lbs, sometimes a 4-5 pounder. Lake record - 11 lbs (caught by me). Like a park. The grounds are kept very well, a few RV spots, firewood available for BBQs. The annual membership dues almost $600.
