My 3 year old weenie dog Amos has a runny nose and sneezes for the 2-3 days. So far the liquid is Clear. I gave him 1/2 of a benadryl.I knew that the benadryl wouldn't hurt him bc the VET Dr. told me to give him that dosage when he goes on trips in a car. Keeps him from throwing up. Allergies? Thoughts?

If you got Cedar around you I'd guess yes.

We have it all over and both me and the dogs are miserable.

If it goes away in a few hours, its no big deal, it happens. Constant for 2-3 days probably should see a vet. If that was the only thing wrong, and my dog was eating, drinking and no other changes, Id probably ride it out.

Dogs dont get colds, and Ive read that nasal discharge that lasts more than a few hours is not good.

No Cedar....

Im no vet or expert on allergies but I dont need a cedar tree near me to cause allergy problems. Id assume (not an expert) with a dogs nose being much more sensitive than ours that allergies affect them a little easier?

Actually dogs can and do get colds. Not the same viruses as humans (species specific) - but symptom wise generally the same.

They can actually catch some strains of the flu from people. Recent studies have shown some strains can be transmitted from canines to human and vice versa.

My schnauzer had allergies but his symptoms were dry itchy skin. He would get it seasonally in the fall and spring just like me, and we'd both be miserable together. He'd be scratching and flaking skin all over the place, and I'd be sneezing and snotting. I gave him benedryl and it really helped.

On that note, I also gave him advil when his arthritis started acting up, and pepto when he had stomach issues. My old vet told me that medication dosages are based on the assumption of a 175 lb human. Therefore, you can adjust the dosage for the weight of the dog and they will be fine.

Interesting. Ill have to look into it. Everything Ive read and heard from vets is dogs dont get colds (at least not like humans do).

Per our vet, Benadryl is okay to give. 1mg per pound of body weight, 2-3 times a day as needed. I just read that if your dog has glaucoma or high blood pressure it might not be a good idea. Never considered dogs having high blood pressure before? LOL Don't recall ever seeing our vet check our pets' BP?

I gave him another dose just now. Amos just ate and seems to have a good appetite, that's good. It bothers me too see him like this. He had some more shots and blood work about 8 days ago. Vet said he was fine

Ask your vet for Once-daily APOQUEL (oclacitinib tablets). My guy after moving over to central Texas started scratching like heck and his eyes and nose was a running. . Vet prescribed this little pill. No more torment from scratching.

Not trying to scare you, but any discharge needs to be checked by a Vet. It could be something as simple as allergies or something far, far more sinister. Our Golden Retriever started off with a runny nose treated with antibiotics. Within a few weeks, he started sneezing blood. Turned out to Nasal Cancer and despite all the treatment available, we only had him for 7 more weeks with him. They will tell you that it is a rare cancer, but we met several people going thru the same thing. We still are not over the terrible experience of losing him. It is always a good idea to have your Vet check out anything new happening to your pet. Sending positive thoughts that your pup only has allergies and is soon feeling better.👍
