I have used both for years. Truthfully, one is not significantly better than the other. They are both good.
What you need to do is think bigger and also get Side scan. If you can afford a boat you can afford at least a 7" or 9" screen. You will upgrade bigger eventually anyway.
I currently use a Lowrance 12" and a Helix-9 on the front.
Call me if I can help further.
David is a good choice.

Lowrance is easier to use for me. No touch screen on Hummingbird Helix models you have to spend thousands for Solix models to get touch when you could get a Elite-9 TI for $850. Plus I like the all in one transducer side imagine down imagine, and 2d all in one transducer. Gotta have the touch screen it would be like having a tablet or smartphone without touchscreen. I do like the mega imaging and 360 imaging if your more of a bass fishing, unless you fish everyday or you are a guide why spend thousands you don't need all that high tech stuff to put fish in the boat.
Can I get an AMEN!

Lowrance is hands down better That’s why everyone is selling their Lowrance in the classifieds to get the Mega imaging. The fact is Humminbird is leading the pack with their Mega imaging. The images are by far better than anything on the market today and I don’t even run Humminbird. LMAO, I scanned the first 3 pages of classifieds and see 1 person selling their lowrance for the mega. Nice try though. Nice try at what? Humminbird is paving the path so Lowrance can stumble on. Truth hurts bro.

Humminbird from David Goodson, Shut Up and Fish here on the TFF. I'm going to place my order with him as soon as the IRS releases my refund.
He is truly a sick individual.

Just wait a couple of months and see if the other brands copy the Humminbird MEGA frequency like they did Humminbird's Side Imaging.

I have a Lowrance Elite 5 on my kayak and a Hummingbird 798 on my 16' Modified V boat. So either will and it is up to you to decide which one you like the best. Welcome to the forum and fish on!

So I've been looking for a unit too and wanted an elite 7 but found out they're called hook now? I understand there's the elite ti's to work with xi5 but if you don't care about that and want the old version it's a hook correct? I went online to cabelas and see they have a hook 7 with si/di/2d tripleshot for 399.00 it says it has gps and touch screen? Sounds like a dang good deal

It's on a different level. Not that Lowrance isn't more than capable of doing the job, but Mega is in a league of its own.

I personally like Humminbirds sonar better on the 598 than I did my Lowrance Elite 5. Its way easier to set up and dail in than the Lowrance. Ive had a crystal clear picture on 2d sonar with the humminbird since day 1. The down scan on the Lowrance was way better however. These are both entry level type units that Ive had experience with. I do believe at this point, the sonars are simply whatever your preference is. When it comes to downscan or side imaging humminbirds MEGA is the way to go.
