Don't underestimate them. Use alllllll the tools available for success. Would you limit yourself to only 10 lb Mono? or Just a Spinnerbait? Some of the most exciting success I have had is using it on an Alabama Rig!!! And then other times it works to get those few tough day bites, to finish a limit. The key thing is they are relatively inexpensive, can be used on ANY bait of YOUR choosing, and are simple to use. Doesn't hurt to try them. It has made many anglers believers after they use them.

Hope this will help: - Use the most natural scents that the Bass feed on. - Use Pure Extract. - Use the scent to mask the human odor. - Use the scent to make the fish hold the bait longer. - Bass will follow the scent trail so apply frequently. Catching is not always about reaction strikes. - Scent is just one more stepping stone to providing fish with everything that they are looking for along with sight, sound, vibration and taste.
I use the Minnow Extract on fast moving baits like spinner bait skirts, swim baits and crank baits. Use the Crayfish on you creature baits and jig skirts. The Night Crawler works best on your slow moving plastics like worms and finesse plastics.
I do not like to cross apply the Pure Extracts on baits that are already scented and have not had the best results doing so. Select baits that are not scented or have someone to hand pour your baits and apply the scent in the pour or just dose the packages a few days before fishing with them.

Been using garlic forever, I have no idea if it actually helps but it doesn't hurt. Had a partner grab it one day thinking it was spray on sunscreen and had it all over him before he got a big whiff. It doesn't wear off unless you get in the water lol.

I use Megastrike, not as an attractant scent but to cover MY scent. It makes no mess if you spill it (can't spill), doesn't make you smell like dead crayfish or shad.

JJ's Magic - use the clear mostly but sometimes dip the tails in Chartreuse or use a Q-tip to add a bit of red to the belly or gills of a swimbait.

Does anybody use Pro-Cure?
I've always used Berkley products but I have recently used Smelly Jelly. I always go with Shad, Crawfish, or Earthworm. I seem to remember that the earthworm wash got the best reaction in the lab testing.
I may need to try Donald's stuff as well.

I like the Pro-Cure also. Have seen that people seem to really like Donald Harper's stuff so thinking about giving it a try. I don't usually start with scent but may add it as I think I might need it. I use it more on my fingertips than on the bait. I use it to mask my scent. I wear gloves which is why it's just on my fingertips. Does it make a difference, I don't know and have not really seen that adding scent helped anything but it for sure probably won't hurt.

Good at hiding scent, and there's the argument that bass in some lakes have been negatively conditioned to garlic.
But, I prefer something more natural--earthworm, shad, or crawfish

I have a somewhat different take on scents, they act as a cover more than anything. But I was a scent addict for years then fished with a guide in GA. and forgot my scent product. We put a serious hurt on them and from that day I use only whatever is on the plastic I buy. When the fish are biting they are biting. On top of that (and something I'm not proud of) I smoke while in the boat and have for years. When I fish with friends or guides I'm never far behind on the numbers of fish caught. So to me scents may be a cover, not sure of that, but like a lot of things in fishing they are a confidence builder. When they feed they feed and if you watch enough fishing shows I think you'll notice few folks adding scent. So if it makes you feel good do it.

WHAT IS anyones thought on coffee flavor?? It was a hot topic of discussion if the "Coffee" was a valid idea. But, we decided to try it and it has tested to be a very effective scent. BUT we do use the natural fish oils with the different scent flavors. (We call ours Kick'n Bass JAVA.) Personal and Staff testing has shown it to be amazing. (NO JOKE, NO SMOKE!!!) I would not have believed it since I could not find a natural comparison flavor. (But Garlic is also the same thing.) So the final reply is: I don't know why it works but it DOES!

I have used scents for many years and came across Donald Harper's brand not too long ago. His scents are the most natural I have found. The only way to find the smell he has produced is to throw some minnows/worms/crayfish in a juicer.... you won't regret the purchase.

I always felt that scents gave me an extra second to detect a strike and set the hook. I do not use then as religiously as I probably should however because I'm lazy lol.

Who likes what scent & when to use???? what type of baits to put scent on.... I started using Donald Harper's craw and minnow sauce about mid last year and it is by far my favorite. I like how it's more of an oil and not a thin liquid spray. It seems to stay on the bait longer and when the bait doesn't feel oily any more I know it's time to put more on. With the other brands its not as easy, in my opinion, to know when it's time to add more. Donald Harper is also a local fishin Texan which is a big + in my book. DM him on the TFF and he'll get you all the info you'd ever need about scent and how to use it.

Many companies do just that. Now you have two different scents mixed. Pure extract is the way to go. Here is my old recipe that I used when I made it myself. Used Minnow as the example; but the same goes for Night Crawlers and Crayfish tails hulled.
- 6 doz. minnows in a blender; chopped to a mush. - Pressure cooked for 15 minutes. - Strained through a cheese cloth twice. - Pour up the oils in baby food jars and freeze for future use.

I was skeptical at first using scents. Now reading more people use it than I thought, I feel better about my purchase. Even if it is a confidence booster, that alone is worth the cost. But, looks like others are getting some use out of something that would otherwise be another gimmick like helicopter lures.

My friend uses scent impregnated worms. Chompers are his favorite. I've been fishing next to him in the boat and these worms are tearing up the bass. He lost a 9 plus at the boat and has caught many nice fish on scented worms.

I use a couple of different scents but for a different reason than I've seen mentioned. I'm not sure if they create bites or cause fish to hang on longer but I'm positive they work as a lubricant on large soft swimbaits and allow for more effective hook sets.

What about using fish oil or krill oil as a base? Kick'n Bass uses all natural fish oils and natural flavors. No artificial lab produced chemicals. Natural works, so there is no need to change it! There is NO magic silver bullet all around one flavor. Different seasons and different Geographical forage bases need different matching attractants.

Just made my first batch of "homemade" scent. My allergies won't allow me to sense what it smells like.
~ 1 cup oil ~ 3 tablespoons garlic powder ~ roasted a head of garlic, smashed, and drained ~ 1 tsp onion powder ~ 2 tsp salt ~ 1/4 fresh coffee grounds
Warmed oil in microwave for 1 minute. Mixed all together then ran through a paint filter.
Put strained oil in a container. Don't know if I need to do anything with the powder/grounds leftovers. Put in a container and freezer. May just toss it in the lake to see if it may attract anything.

I've used the minnow or shad (don't recall) and the craw scents both by yum. I also use spike it garlic scent. I like to think fish hold on longer to my plastics when I apply scents but I honestly have no way of proving it. Although the bass in the Rio Grande river don't care. They pick up my plastic and really hold on to it with or without added scent.

Just made my first batch of "homemade" scent. My allergies won't allow me to sense what it smells like. May get to fish tomorrow. Will use it and "cross our fingers".

I wonder if scent actually makes a difference though..... It is very hard to tell in our lakes where you are only getting a few bites per day. You could have just got into a school of feeding fish when you starting catching them; so you never know if was the bait that you just changed to, the scent you were using, the new color you switched to or like I sad the area that you started fishing. This is why I say it works. We fish Mexico where we catch 100 Bass per day in each boat if you are using the right plastic and it is scented. Most of the time there is at least 3 boats in our group. - I have a bag of Brush Hogs dosed with Crayfish for one of the boats. - The other boats are given bags of Brush Hogs that have no scent. - The next day I take up the bag and restock each boat bag of Brush Hogs. - Each boat is using the same color which is Watermelon/Red. - I give another one of the boats the Bag dosed with the Crayfish on the next day. - This goes on all week and none of the boats knows what I am doing. - Every day the boat with the Crayfish dosed Brush Hogs will have over 100 Bass. - The other boats will only catch 60 to 70 Bass per day. I have done this test for 5 years with the same results. I have also done the test with every scent we can get our hands on. One boat will get Night Crawler, one boat will get garlic, another boat will get Bang and etc.. Next trip we will do it again with Minnow against all the other scents. Guess who's scent wins out every day, day in and day out.

Using a bass jig with a flying squirrel trailer caught six today. I am not convinced but I think it may have helped. Here are the two biggest. (7 lb. cat and 4 lb. bass)

I wonder if scent actually makes a difference though..... Try it and see! What do you have to loose? $6.00? Lures and bag of worms cost that much!

Found this recipe to make a garlic dipping sauce for bread. Sounds like a good starting point to make some scent attractant. Going to try it when I get some more fresh garlic.
1 head of garlic 1 cup of olive oil
Smash and peel cloves of garlic. Transfer to a medium pot, add olive oil. Heat over medium-low until bubbles form around garlic, about 3 minutes. Let cook about 10 minutes, reducing heat to low if garlic begins to brown. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature, about 45 minutes.

Just made my first batch of "homemade" scent. My allergies won't allow me to sense what it smells like. Went back to same pond today and did not use the "homemade" scent. Caught only one bass. This stuff just might be working.

Found another recipe online. They call it "Sizzling Liquid Bait Attractant". Looks interesting. Here is the recipe.
1/2 cup vegetable oil 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon chili powder 1 teaspoon turmeric powder 1 teaspoon garlic powder 3 teaspoons corn or soy flour 1 teaspoon salt
Stir until flour is dissolved. Let set for at least one hour before using.

Put the oil in the skillet, dredge some crappie fillets in the rest and fry them up! Sounds pretty good to me, maybe the fish like it too??
See you on the lake and have a great day!
