I use a couple of different scents but for a different reason than I've seen mentioned. I'm not sure if they create bites or cause fish to hang on longer but I'm positive they work as a lubricant on large soft swimbaits and allow for more effective hook sets.

What about using fish oil or krill oil as a base? Kick'n Bass uses all natural fish oils and natural flavors. No artificial lab produced chemicals. Natural works, so there is no need to change it! There is NO magic silver bullet all around one flavor. Different seasons and different Geographical forage bases need different matching attractants.

Just made my first batch of "homemade" scent. My allergies won't allow me to sense what it smells like.
~ 1 cup oil ~ 3 tablespoons garlic powder ~ roasted a head of garlic, smashed, and drained ~ 1 tsp onion powder ~ 2 tsp salt ~ 1/4 fresh coffee grounds
Warmed oil in microwave for 1 minute. Mixed all together then ran through a paint filter.
Put strained oil in a container. Don't know if I need to do anything with the powder/grounds leftovers. Put in a container and freezer. May just toss it in the lake to see if it may attract anything.

I've used the minnow or shad (don't recall) and the craw scents both by yum. I also use spike it garlic scent. I like to think fish hold on longer to my plastics when I apply scents but I honestly have no way of proving it. Although the bass in the Rio Grande river don't care. They pick up my plastic and really hold on to it with or without added scent.

I wonder if scent actually makes a difference though..... It is very hard to tell in our lakes where you are only getting a few bites per day. You could have just got into a school of feeding fish when you starting catching them; so you never know if was the bait that you just changed to, the scent you were using, the new color you switched to or like I sad the area that you started fishing. This is why I say it works. We fish Mexico where we catch 100 Bass per day in each boat if you are using the right plastic and it is scented. Most of the time there is at least 3 boats in our group. - I have a bag of Brush Hogs dosed with Crayfish for one of the boats. - The other boats are given bags of Brush Hogs that have no scent. - The next day I take up the bag and restock each boat bag of Brush Hogs. - Each boat is using the same color which is Watermelon/Red. - I give another one of the boats the Bag dosed with the Crayfish on the next day. - This goes on all week and none of the boats knows what I am doing. - Every day the boat with the Crayfish dosed Brush Hogs will have over 100 Bass. - The other boats will only catch 60 to 70 Bass per day. I have done this test for 5 years with the same results. I have also done the test with every scent we can get our hands on. One boat will get Night Crawler, one boat will get garlic, another boat will get Bang and etc.. Next trip we will do it again with Minnow against all the other scents. Guess who's scent wins out every day, day in and day out.

Using a bass jig with a flying squirrel trailer caught six today. I am not convinced but I think it may have helped. Here are the two biggest. (7 lb. cat and 4 lb. bass)

Found this recipe to make a garlic dipping sauce for bread. Sounds like a good starting point to make some scent attractant. Going to try it when I get some more fresh garlic.
1 head of garlic 1 cup of olive oil
Smash and peel cloves of garlic. Transfer to a medium pot, add olive oil. Heat over medium-low until bubbles form around garlic, about 3 minutes. Let cook about 10 minutes, reducing heat to low if garlic begins to brown. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature, about 45 minutes.
