I am thinking about creek fishing but I have absolutely no idea what rig to use. The creek that I am going is pretty shallow, mostly 2-3 ft and maybe 4 ft in some spot. How do you fish in creek that shallow? Do you use a bobber something?

Jig and a pegged bobber about 2 ft deep. I like the smaller pear bobbers when fishing that shallow as they are easier to detect bites with.

Jig and slip cork, set at the depth the fish want.

Rig depends on the creek. If you can use jig and bobber that's awesome, but a lot of creeks have crappie on the bottom in holes that are 10, 12, 15, etc ft deep and so casting and slow rolling or hopping is required.

FYI crappie don't like shallow water creeks. A 2-3-4 ft creek MIGHT by chance hold fish but the majority of ones that deep are not going to have any. 8+ft deep is usually required, if you have a creek like that near you, my personal opinion would be for you to start there.

If I am walking the bank, I tightline...in the boat, it depends on what type of structure I am fishing...heavy structure, tightline...light structure, slip cork...open water (around stumps) fixed cork or slip cork...

Now, to me, I prefer to tightline with a stiff rod and very fast tip (no limber rods for me) and braided line...12 to 20lb Bonehead, suffix, or spiderwire...in black preferably...normally, I fish heavy structure (beastly heavy) where such a rig is required if you want fish in the cooler versus just watching them get off the hook time after time, with a lesser rig...hope this information helps...

Light line (4lb preferably fluorocarbon leader), light weight 1/32-1/16, ultralight rod, and a small peg bobber in creeks

I think Eritmuller said it best...depends on the Creek...well said. Beginning around Christmas, I start fishing creeks...the deeper ones first, then shallower ones later into april. I run about seven different creeks and a river or two, fairly regularly...iigrew up creek fishing (and hunting) as a youngster...and still love it..I prefer to walk the banks if possible, but will admit that dragging a stringer full of big guns out is much harder than it used to be. So now I will sometimes boat into the creek, then walk (when the bite is good). Of course, the creeks I fish require heavy equipment to be successful with any regularity.

As a kid, I used to chase goggleyes in a creek behind the house (trotline bait) and we used light rigs to catch them. There weren’t any crappie in that creek, but we were happy to catch whatever bit our bait. That said, I have fished for crappie in creeks with light line and limber poles, with success...I just don’t know where any such creeks are anymore. So, once you graduate college, let’s go fishing together...I will show you some crappie creeks where your rig won’t work and I want you to show me some crappie creeks where it will...TCU Honors Graduate 1986, Finance...Go Frogs!,,
