You know, with all the technology available now, why don't they place a distance sensor on the blunt end of the trolling motor that can sense stumps and obstacles and either cause the trolling motor to turn to avoid it, reverse the direction, or shut down the motor?
Too many times our motor hits a submerged stump either bending or breaking the shaft.
On average, your heart beats 100,000 times a day. One day, one of those heartbeats will be your last. Then what?
The answer is found in Jesus Christ who said "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." John 10:10 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

That's a good idea. But thinking this through. If the motor turns, the driver goes the opposite direction. If the motor reverses, the driver goes over the front. If the motor shuts down, it bumps the stump anyway.
Not sure the answer. You'd think with all of the materials available, they'd be able to create something mostly indestructible.

An alarm that gets louder as the object gets nearer might work. Someone could make money on this idea if they could get it to work and sell. I'll just watch....
The only difference between a little girls scream and a warrior's battle cry is the direction your'e running!

Safety sense for trolling motors. Since you have no restraint when operating I don't think auto braking is a good idea. Never broke or bent a shaft but my old Ranger always had slightly under powered motors and I never ran on high speed in stumpy areas.

Instead of looking for technology to fix something, maybe just more education on how to run the trolling motor. WOT throttle on a trolling motor is for open water moving from point A to B not in a stump field.

Too many variables exists for that to ever work. It would have to try and compensate for wind, current, boat speed, obstables around the boat, etc. What would it do when you were around boat docks? What about fishing in stump fields or flipping cover? What happens when you have to run close to the shore to free a snagged lure? Minn Kota has a breakaway system built into their trolling motors to help reduce the impact on the shaft and motor. Motorguides have a spring system in their mounts. I havnt even gotten into what would happen if it changed directions without you knowing and threw people from a boat.

Wait till the trolling motor zigs when you zag on the deck and it dumps you out of the boat.
That one would the last day it would operate for me.
