Hello Everyone,

I'm really new to this but having a blast. I started fly fishing August of last yer. Been to Gunnison River in Colorado, Broken Bow, Port Aransas Bay, Galveston Bay. I have been trying flys since October.

Anyways, I'm 47 ,I live in Rockwall and just looking for other Fly Fishermen to learn from. I'm going to post some pics of my flies and stuff. I also, bass fish at Fork alot and I scuba/speargun the gulf oil rigs 2-3 times a year out of New Orleans. Best diving in the world.

WM

welcome

Here's an invitation to the next Dallas Fly Fisher's meeting the first Monday in Feb at 7:00 at the Wyndam near the corner of hwy 75 and 635. (Not that far from Rockwall.) It can be a good place to find people to help you and to fish with you.

Another good event that is coming up is Fly Fish Texas on Feb 24 in Athens, TX. There will be fly tying, casting lessons, fishing, and fly fishing related presentations. I plan to give a presentation on fly casting that day.

Willy, also in Rockwall. Connected with Cory, another beginner in Rockwall a week or so ago. Got my first tying lessons with Andy Puyans, a Hall-of-Fame tyer about 30 years ago. Never tied anything complicated myself...just what I thought would catch fish. Can show you a novel way to build your own leaders and yarn indicators...super cheap. As for flies, like I said, I'm a modest tyer.

To Rex, I'm been meaning to make a DFF meeting...maybe I can soon.

Im down for sure, My daughter has a rodeo in Athens that day. I will already be in town.

I will also be at the brew and fly fishing festival. MY friend has brewery, and we were going to do a booth, but the event only partnered with commercial brewers. Super bummed about that.

I will make the meeting in Feb! Thanks so much for the invite.

I've never done any club activities, they are generally far from my home and not at a good time, but I bet there's tons of fun and good stuff to learn from interaction in that setting.

Don't discount the web and forums either. There's a vast wealth of good stuff there too.

My only hands on fly-tying class series was at BPS in Pearland and I found it to be pretty disappointing and not very useful. I've learned much more from the web and YouTube.

One good book that I think really brings fly fishing and fly tying into perspective is " The History of Fly-Fishing in Fifty Flies" by Ian Whitelaw. The book is less of a how to but more of a philosophy and mindset type of book. There are lots of folks in the book that bucked the conventional thinking of the age and gave us some of the great patterns we enjoy today.

Fly fishing is great fun and I've found just about any fish I've come across will take a fly. Some fish are more fun than others and there really isn't a right or wrong way to fly fish but just a lot of different tastes and ideas out there. The fish decide what's acceptable and are the true authorities.
