OK, first time going for stripers, and Buchanan seems to be the lake of choice. Never have done this before, so I'm thinking about hitting the upper end of the lake around points and humps, looking for shad and schools of Stripers. we'll try deadsticking jigs off the bottom to see if we can entice the bite. I figure we'll do alot of looking around with Sonar before actually getting the line wet.

Do you have a preferred method of finding and catching stripers on Buchanan this time of the year?

Hope to not get skunked going to Stripers for the first time on Buchanan.

Well we went today. Hit many deep point and humps. Drifted across tons of bat and fish, but didn't catch any on large flukes. We realized these were tons of white bass. So we targeted whitebass and boated 164 fish. We experimented with thumping and no doubt it works. Only one striper was caught, but we'll take a 164 day. We'll definitely be back looking for strippers. Video will be posted when it's ready.

Have they moved close to the mouth of the river?

We went yesterday mainly bass fishing. First time on the lake and did a lot of graphing, didnt see many boats and didnt catch much. Can you tell us how deep you were finding the whites? And did you catch em on slabs?

Thanks for the report. Been planning on a Buchanan trip. Have only fished there once and did not catch a thing. I believe the stripers are probably headed upriver and out of the main lake but I could be wrong.

We were on the upper part of the lake. We drift fished over a quarter mile stretch and marked fish and bait the entire time. They were in the channel at 40-50 feet. Here's the first video of the thumping. The catching comes next. All on spoons and soft plastics.

Good video!
Fish make a thump sound when they eat bait. Thumping mimics that sound.

Hi Bobo, next is getting an automatic one like the ones you have, instead of manually thumping the boat. Thanks for your nice comment on the video.

Well I gave it a try this past Wednesday. Blue bird day but mighty cold and no wind. Was going dead sticking for striper. Fished the main lake from Morgan creek over to Garrett Island. Marked some fish but could not get them to bite. I guess it looks like I should have downsized on the lures; however, as I am just learning to dead stick I was just too stuborn to downsize. I have since read on TFF the water temps in the 40's is probably too cold for deadsticking. Had not heard that before. Looks like the cold water did not bother the white's. Great video, enjoyed it and some of the others you have made. Looks loke the Belton guide trip was a great trip for learning about the graph. I need to take a course.

Yep, we started out deadsticking for stripper too. Didnt have any luck. When we downsized lure size, the whites went after it. Im still in search of the stripers... but whites will do until I cross paths with stripers.
