We're too envious to help you. Does the Island of Jeff (Humble) have any funds to send an old man with you and I will show you what to do. roflmao

I’m guessing Ron Jr, is the son? If so I went with his dad back in 1996. We landed in Manaus Brazil and we fished for two weeks. I had a blast. The food was pure greatness. Thus was back in the days of everyone throwing the foot long wood choppers.

Yes, Ron retired a few years back his son took over the business. Dad was in the business for about 40 years. Son has been doing it for over 25 years.

I have been in September in 2014 and 2016. In September and October, you will be fishing parts of the Amazon that most American outfitter do not fish. Most of the other outfitters fish North or Manuas near Barcelos and hit the river up that way. You will be fishing east of Manuas. You will fly to Itapringa and fish the Uatuma and Jatapu Rivers.

The fishing is not for the faint of heart. It is hot, and the wood choppers/large prop baits will wear you out. But, the rewards are nothing short of incredible. Make sure you have a high speed reel. 8.0 to 1 or greater. Spool 80 lb power pro on 3 reels. Pray for falling low water conditions and you will have a blast.

I will be their in September this year as well.

I went with Ron Speed Jr. in October a year and a half ago. We had an awesome trip with falling water and biting fish. The best of food and accommodations on the boat.

It is hot and humid and you will sweat your [censored] off.. But it is the most explosive top water bite I have ever seen.. The first few will scare the begezzers out of you..

Here's a recap of our trip..

That's the type of info I was looking for. Things from those who have been that aren't in the info the outfitter gives.

I figured it was 80# braid and fast reels from reading up a little. The fastest reels I have are Shimano Chronarch CI4+ which are 7.6:1. I was planning on taking them. If you were going to buy a reel specific for fishing there what would you buy?

I was thinking about having a few big Whopper Ploppers custom painted in the traditional colors they throw there. Put extra strong hooks on them as well. It seems they would be good.

That Shimano will work just fine.. I used 65 lb braid with no problems.. A lot of folks use 80.. Speed has baits and hooks and heavy snap rings on the boat. We did most of that at home.. But he has whatever you don't.

Any good quality high speed reel with a good drag will be fine..

You're gonna have fun.. Good luck!

Great write up. Great info. Thanks.

That's going to make the wait seem that much longer.

I just returned from Brazil last weekend. The fishing was good. 65lb braid is more than enough . Buy some of the slim wood chopper baits. There is a lure called a “ pervesa” these are the ticket. Take about 5-10 of these. Also take some red and chartreuse peacock bass jigs. I took some of the new shimano trax 300 series reels this trip. These reels are very good for the peacocks. PM me if can help with anything or if you have and questions

FYI - it is hot but you can deal with it. Look up scratch labs. They make a powdered hydration mix you add to bottled water. This stuff is much better than Gatorade

Be prepared son, be prepared, that is what and older man told me before i went. Throwing that big chopper all day in the heat is a whoopin, but you catch the bigguns on it.
