How come Black Diamonds aren't grown commercially any more? I can never find one in the markets, or even at the Farmer's Market. There is one of similar shape that they grow, but they will admit that it is not a Black Diamond.

I'm glad there are wine drinkers in this world ..... it saves more beer for the rest of us.

They're too heavy to handle safely is my guess.

The reason you cannot find Black Diamonds is shelf life. Unlike other commercially grown water melons Black Diamonds must be consumed shortly after picking. I was told by my local farmers market manager they could not afford to buy the melons only to throw half of them away as they were fit for consumption.

I would think they get to big for stores to handle. When I was a kid my family and aunts and uncles would go to Brownwood lake for a week before school and peanut harvest. Uncle from Slaton, Texas had irrigation land and he would load up 6-8 big black diamonds and we would put them in the lake to cool them, brings back good memories. food

They don't stack/or haul as well as the longer skinnier melons
