FedEx is far superior over both UPS and USPS.
I've ordered several rods via FedEx and never an issue thus far. Go FedEx!!

I shipped several rods in a 6 diameter by 93 long pvc pipe a while back. USPS wanted $189. UPS was $80.

I went back home and cut the tube down.

I shipped a broken rod back to G Loomis about 6 months ago via UPS. Obviously, I wanted the cheapest rate and it was $38. The rod was in a cardboard tube, but I was awfully shocked at the price.

Next time I'll give USPS a whirl. Maybe figure out if I can do the deal where they pick it up at your house so that I don't have to brave the lines (something about post office lines; I just can't stand them).

No guarantee there, but it is the best way to pack one. I had a rod shipped to me in a pvc pipe and USPS managed to break the tube and the rod inside. They just taped up the end of the rod sticking out of the tube and delivered it. I took it in to them and they did not care either how or when it broke, it was just mine to deal with. They did not care and did not offer any help at all. I NEVER use them for shipping rods.

I will never use USPS again. I shipped my costas back to have the rubber replaced and after a week of not hearing anything, i checked the tracking number only to find out my package has been delayed and they wouldn't tell me where it is or why it's delayed. I hate not having my sunglasses. I'm glad I paid for the insurance but I'm not sure how easy it's going to be to get the money from them.

In my opinion there is no "good" way. Bad experience with USPS-broke a rod customer sent me pictures of the tube and it was bent badly. USPS would do nothing. People I deal with when I am buying rods say they never use USPS. I think securing the butt end of the rod to the outside end of the tube then taping the cap on helps keep the tip from being broken.
