Hey guys, so i am buying a boat through a private seller. He presented the registration for the trailer and the boat title. However, no title for the motor. I called tpwd to verify if everythings om and they confirmed that the financer from 2005 no longer exist so there is paperwork that has to be done with the current company that bought them out. The motor shows a lien hold on it but it is paid off, as it was with the boat.

Anyone know if this is a lengthy process?
Also, would i be able to buy the boat, register the boat and trailer in my name and start using it while we wait for the motor title? Or do i NEED the motor title to be transferred under my name as well asap?

is the title of the motor in the name of the person you are buying it from?

I've run "untitled" motors off and on for many years.. been stopped, checked, ticketed by water cops many, many times, both state and city due to my hot rod nature.. noise, speed mostly.. never been checked/questioned about tha motor in anyway other than "why is it so loud"? (hi perf production stuff).. would dare say that there is no one on this board that has their motor checked by a game warden.. tha absolute only time I needed a title is financing and selling (to some but not all)..

so its up to you but as long as tha boat is tagged/registered to you you can do what ya want... but to each his own....

Yes he is the original owner. Bought in 2002 and paid off in 2005.

you would need to get it titled into your name in order to purchase insurance or to sell it to someone else legally. might be able to get a bonded title.

The seller should produce the title.

Have him apply for a lost title.

Don't buy the motor without the title. If it is in the current holder's name, then he/she should apply for a lost title. If he is not willing to do that - no deal.

roflmao

No kidding.
I was recently at TPWD getting titles done and the lady there couldn't even understand the gov process....much less explain it to me in laymens terms so I could understand. Fun place to spend an afternoon and money.

When you decide to sell it you will have issues for the same reason. The TPWD is going to ask for it when you title the boat. If he is the original owner it should be easy for him to file the paperwork to get it for you and save you headaches down the road. Just because they don't check for it now doesn't mean things dont change and they start then what are you going to do? I have walked from deals when they didn't provide the title.

I got an older 03 pickup i was going to sell but never could find my title . Found out the lien holder never released it . Wellsfargo banks are bad about that . So they had to send me a release and i had to go apply for a title at the DOT . I had to pay cost too . Not fair but banks are like that . But i agree , make the owner get the work done and get the title theirself . Saves you a headache !

My last boat I bought had a lien on it. I will never, ever do that again. Clear titles or no deal, thanks.

I would like to jump in and ask a few questions then about this subject. My father in law bought a boat brand new in the early 80's and kept it for most of his life. He then gave it to his youngest son to use for his family and he just always went to get the registration for him. After fixing up the boat and then ultimately deciding to buy a new boat, the brother in law gave me the boat. At that time my FIL was in the hospital and died shortly after that, so I've had the boat for a few years parked as a project I wanted to get to but haven't. I tried selling recently and couldn't even get rid of it for $100 for boat, motor, and trailer all together. The boat floats, motor runs fine, trailer needs new tires but lighting is new on it, the boat is just ugly (think 80's tan color) and needs some TLC. The problem is we never found the titles in the house when we cleaned it out after my FIL passed, and nobody wants to deal with getting the bonded title work done, even with my providing a bill of sale and I'm will to document who the owner is and the story behind it (as written above).

So my question is, I have a project I am considering doing with the trailer, how do I dispose of the boat, and could I sell the motor separately or just trash it because getting a title is worth more than it would sell for? Thoughts?
