Lake Austin is a very dangerous lake, because it's very narrow in its entire length and in some places very dark. And has lots of ski-boat and wakeboat traffic with inexperienced drivers. I hope everyone makes it through this latest tragedy. Prayers for all involved.

I'm always terrified of going too fast on Lake Austin. It's so skinny with so many curves and turns. Prayers to all involved.

I hope the two injured recover fully. I'll fend off the urge to jump to conclusions about what happened -- but a short list of possibilities comes to mind given one of the drivers swam / ran away. I avoid the mayhem and hazards of LA, and am content to fish Travis. I2D.

My son plays baseball next weekend in Austin, and I had planned on taking the boat and fishing Lake Austin between games. I believe I have now changed my mind.....never been on the lake before. Hoping for a miracle to find the woman safe.

Prayers for all involved. Ill say it, likely a drunk hit them, hopefully they will find and identify him today, and let the justice system take over.

Wonder if people leaving scenes like that are charged with DWI or BWI? I knew couple of guys in HS that left wrecked cars and ran off, and eventually came home and cops had been there or were waiting. None of them got DWIS.

I've seen many people running without lights and with all the boat houses having water level lights it's a [censored] shoot sometimes trying to identify stuff on the water. Going to be puckered up when the Wednesday nighters start back up in March

That's too bad. Lake Austin can be kinda dangerous with all of the water level lights. Twists and turns don't help either. Prayers to the families involved.

sorry, just saw that Jaret mentioned the same thing.

I can get to Lake Austin so easy from my house but absolutely refuse to go because of the idiocy I saw there during my only 5 trips. Swimmers on the ramps, drunks boating around at night, skiers after dark with no lights, very dangerous conditions, no thanks - no fishing is worth that.

Why is it even called a lake if it's really more of a creek??

It's actually the Colorado River below Lake Travis as it wends its way into metropolitan Austin. It's part of the Highland Lakes Chain (Buchanan, Inks, LBJ, Marble Falls, Travis, and Austin). It's about 21 miles in length from dam to dam but is only around 1600 acres of surface area.

Lake Austin or wake Austin as some people call it. When lake Travis ran out of water a lot of the boats and people started moving to lake Austin. Now being on Lake Austin kind of has a prestige to it as if its the "luxury" play lake. The houses along the lake start around 6 million with some as high as 15. Due to the long straight nature with the high cliff walls on both sides it has become one of the premier wake surfing lakes in the country. In the summer time it can get as rough as the Gulf of Mexico due to all the wake boats. It offers incredible scenery and is right in the middle of the city of Austin. It use to be an awesome fishery with quite a few sharelunkers coming out of there. Several years ago they added a ton of grass carp and they basically ate everything. The water turned from clear to basically outright muddy. Once that happened the fishing got steadily worse. You can still catch fish there but it is a shadow of how it use to be.
