Most are truly amazing, others are not. I'd say about 2% do not belong in the medical field and do not need to be around living things. Hopefully you'll only experience good. If he goes on medication, especially stuff like morphine, someone's gonna have to observe its destruction once he passes. If you have any addicts in your family, you'll need to watch them. Lock the drugs up.

I'm sorry you're going through this.

While he is on hospice you will use their Dr however you can still go see his Dr if you want.

My wife was on hospice at this time last year but was remove at the end of March due to improvement and will most likely be placed back on at some time in the future.

Peace and comfort to you and your family during this time.

/\. My mother was in hospice and this was our experience. Prayer for both of you Lakkota

We used hospice when my mom got to that point about 11 years ago. They were some of the most caring, gentle folks I have ever met. They would sit and talk with her (before she slipped into a coma like trance), read to her, bathe her and clean her, and administer the proper meds to keep her pain free.

They do things so that you don't have to, allowing you to just spend as much quality time as possible with your loved one. I don't know how someone can do that day after day. Special folks for sure!

I'm sorry you have to deal with this but they will make it much easier.

At the point hospice comes in the time is near. Had to deal with them twice, both times they were great.... very accommodating and treated my loved ones very well through the end.

Remember the goal is comfort, not healing. If he pulls through and gets better that's good but not the goal of care.

Generally how it works:

You'll have an RN as case manager to oversee your dad's care and they'll make periodic visits, not necessarily every day though. They originally set up equipment delivery to home cases and instruct on med administration. Case managers are available 24/7 and are generally quick to come out.

LVN's will come in and check meds daily, answer questions, give recommendations and aids come in periodically for baths, linen changes, and other bedside care.

Be sure and ask how care is organized. Generally your responsibilities are giving meds and monitoring if Dad is comfortable with the dose given.

We used home hospice with my mom in 2011 who lived beside me. It was a tough time for sure.

Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.

Ours for my dad was great. Just good caring people. The nurse and Chaplin stayed all day and all night till about 4 am, I told them I was comfortable giving the morphine (mom didnt want to and my sister is a meth head (supposedly clean) so I was the only one other than the nurse that could give it to him) so they left, he died at about 11 am. They were back within 20 minutes of our call.
