I watched a guy at Fayette last week pulling his boat out. He was driving some kind of front wheel drive intermediate SUV. When he started out, he floor boarded the gas pedal and smoked his tires for at least a full minute before he stsrted to move up the ramp. When you give too much power to the wheels and they spin, you aren't helping matters. Give it a slow throttle and be patient. Smoking the tires make you look foolish.

It's probably the first time he got to experience "smoking the tires". Give em a break.

Bet that was interesting to watch, especially if it was at Oak Thicket. That ramp is a drop off!

I would hazard a guess that a front wheel drive has more weight over the drive wheels than a rear wheel drive does.

Going up a ramp, or just taking off quickly, the weight shifts to the rear of the vehicle. Between that and torque steer, I am not a fan of fwd.

I would hazard a guess that a front wheel drive has more weight over the drive wheels than a rear wheel drive does. yep.....and they apply more pressure to the wheels when in reverse also! Do you understand "weight transfer"? There is a reason John Forces funny car isn't FWD.....you do know that, right?

We arent or at least Im not launching off the line pulling my boat up the ramp weight transfer is minimal. With the weight of the driveline over the front axle I bet it still has more traction. Its real easy to hammer down and spin a rear wheel drive too.

I understand what you're saying in theory but that has not been my real world experience. Every FWD I've ever driven would spin the wheels easier than a RWD..and that's on a flat surface without trailer weight on the rear.

My experiences have been quite the opposite. Light in the rear pickups spin easily. Again when your spinning the tires in the FWD I assume your were giving it quite a bit of throttle. Apply slowly. I regret to admit it... but I have pulled a few trailers with FWD vehicles and have launched a few boats with FWD vehicles, they work as fine as a car could for the task at hand, traction was not a problem, but suspension was pretty lacking.

Pickups have twice the torque and the rear tires often end up in the water/moss/reeds. They can spin, too...BUT for different reasons, imo.
But since I don't know of any FWD pickups, I think it would be more fair to compare a SUVs.

I don't know I used a diesel jetta with a 5 speed and a ford focus with a 5 speed to pull a couple jon boats and a 14-foot glass boat.
All the wet/moss aside more weight is more traction. The guy smoked the tires because he put the hammer down, just like would happen in a RWD truck. Gentle steady throttle application and neither would have spun a turn.

Its real easy to hammer down and spin a rear wheel drive too. With the weight of the trailer and boat on the rear bumper, the FWD has a reverse weight transfer. More on the rear wheels and less on the front wheels. The guy I posted about just stayed on the throttle and smoked the tires till you could not see the vehicle. He did eventually pull it out, but he took a few miles off the life of the tires.
